ENUGU — Umuopu Ancient Kingdom in Igbo Eze Local Government Area of Enugu State is set to host a grand civic reception in honour of Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla (retd.), immediate past Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), on January 6, 2026.

The planned homecoming was announced by the traditional ruler of the kingdom, His Royal Highness, Igwe Cyril Ayogu, following a meeting of the Igwe-in-Council and other key community stakeholders.

According to Igwe Ayogu, the reception is in recognition of Vice Admiral Ogalla’s outstanding contributions to Umuopu community, Enugu State and Nigeria at large during his distinguished naval career.

Vice Admiral Ogalla had an illustrious journey in the Nigerian Navy, beginning at the Nigerian Military School, Zaria, where he recorded the best result in the West African School Certificate Examination. He replicated the feat at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), earning the prestigious Sword of Honour as the overall best graduating cadet, presented by then Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida.

In just over two years and four months as Chief of the Naval Staff, Ogalla left lasting footprints in the Nigerian Navy through landmark infrastructural projects, enhanced personnel welfare and significant improvements in maritime security.

He executed major development projects in Navy Town, Lagos, as well as in Kaduna, Benue, Enugu, Ebonyi, Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, Abuja and several other states.

Under his leadership, Nigeria’s crude oil production reportedly rose from 1.4 million barrels per day in June 2023 to 1.8 million barrels per day. His tenure also recorded zero incidents of piracy in Nigerian waters, a feat attributed largely to strengthened maritime security operations, including the launch of Operation Delta Sanity in January 2025, aimed at combating illegal oil bunkering.

The planned reception marks Vice Admiral Ogalla’s first visit to his hometown since his retirement on October 24, 2025.

The two-day celebration is scheduled for January 5 and 6, 2026. Activities will commence with a suya night on January 5, while the main event on January 6 will feature a Thanksgiving Mass at noon, followed by a grand community reception at the Central School Grounds, Umuopu.

Vice Admiral Ogalla served as the 24th Chief of the Naval Staff, having been appointed in June 2023. His tenure was characterised by professionalism, ethical conduct, operational efficiency and reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s maritime domain.

For the Umuopu community, his leadership holds special significance, as the Nigerian Navy, under his watch, sited and established a fully operational Naval College in the area. The project is widely regarded as a major educational and economic boost to the community.

In addition, a strategic access road linking the naval college and passing through several communities in Enugu Ezike was constructed, significantly improving connectivity and socio-economic activities in the area.

The oldest man in the community, Chief Uroko Nwa Ossai, alongside other leaders, described the reception as an opportunity to express gratitude to a son whose national service translated into tangible development at home and across the country.

Organisers said the event is expected to attract top government officials, traditional rulers, senior military officers, as well as guests from within and outside Nigeria.
