The Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) has reconnected electricity supply to the FCT Water Board, paving the way for the restoration of water services across the Federal Capital Territory after days of disruption.
The company said the earlier disconnection, which led to the interruption of water supply, was due to the accumulation of more than one year of unpaid electricity bills by the FCT Water Board, despite several notices and engagements to regularise the account in line with regulatory provisions.
In a statement, AEDC acknowledged the concerns and appeals from residents affected by the outage and noted that the decision to restore power was taken in the interest of public health and community wellbeing.
According to the company, the Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Chijioke Okwuokenye, approved the immediate reconnection to enable the prompt resumption of water services in affected areas of the FCT.
“This decision underscores AEDC’s commitment to the welfare of the communities it serves and our belief that access to essential services must be safeguarded, particularly where public health and safety are concerned,” the company said.
However, AEDC clarified that the reconnection was granted on a conditional basis. The FCT Water Board has been issued a two-week ultimatum to present and begin implementing a credible payment plan towards settling its outstanding electricity obligations.
While reaffirming its openness to engagement and collaborative solutions, AEDC warned that failure to comply within the stipulated period would leave the company with no option but to reapply service disconnection in line with regulatory guidelines.
The electricity distributor added that disconnection remains a last resort and assured residents of its continued commitment to transparent engagement, regulatory compliance and the delivery of sustainable power services in the Federal Capital Territory
