100 benefit from Lagos Ikoyi Diamond Lions Club Hunger Week outreach

LAGOS— As part of the global Lions Clubs International Hunger Relief initiative, the Lagos Ikoyi Diamond Lions Club carried out a Hunger Week Outreach aimed at alleviating hunger and supporting vulnerable members of the community.

The outreach, which took place at Ikoyi Recreational park along Ijeh Road, saw the distribution of essential food items including rice, beans, garri, noodles, and vegetable oil to over 100 beneficiaries. The initiative was designed to provide short-term relief while also creating awareness about the growing challenge of hunger in local communities.

Speaking at the event, President of Lagos Ikoyi Diamond Lions Club, Lion (Arc) Ladipo Lewis, said the club was established about six months ago, adding: “This is the ninth monthly activities we have done. This programme is Relieving Hunger Project.

“One of the purposes of Lions Club is helping the less privilege, helping the low income group and giving out palliatives to help them relieve hunger. It’s one of the UN’s SDGs and all over the world, this week, Lions Clubs are carrying out this activity. We contribute and source for funds to carry out our activities. We are a non governmental organisation, all these are contributions from members. It an honour to give and as we are giving, we will be rewarded.”

Also speaking, Chairperson of the Hunger Service Committee, Lion Omolola OluFowose, emphasized the importance of collective action in tackling hunger, adding:“Hunger is real and so is our response. As Lions, we believe that no one should go to bed hungry and this outreach reflects our commitment to service and compassion.”

On her part, Temitope Fawehinni, a Dietitian/Nutritionist, advised members of the community to eat healthily. She named some of the healthy foods to include beans, vegetables and advised them to drink a lot of water to stay healthy..

According to her, “Avoid stress. Anything that has ability to stress you, avoid it, eat moderately as  moderation is key.”

Members of the club actively participated in the distribution exercise,T he event also highlighted the role of community service, volunteerism and partnerships in addressing food insecurity.

The Lagos Ikoyi Diamond Lions Club expressed appreciation to members, donors, and partners whose financial and moral support contributed to the success of the outreach. The club reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining humanitarian efforts that improve lives and promote community well-being.
