Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong announces retirement from int’l football

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has officially announced his retirement from international football, drawing the curtain on a decade long journey defined by leadership, sacrifice, and national pride.

In a deeply personal and emotional letter, Troost-Ekong revealed that the decision though difficult, comes from a place of peace and pride.

He opened his message by honouring the late Stephen Keshi, the man who gave him his debut:

“In 2015, a phone call from the late Stephen Keshi changed my life. A month later, the Big Boss gave me my debut. His belief in me ignited a desire to follow in his footsteps. Every single time I’ve put on the iconic shirt… I’ve thought back to that exact moment.”

From that moment to becoming captain of Africa’s most passionately followed team, Troost-Ekong says the journey was beyond anything he imagined:

“Going on to captain the Super Eagles was beyond my wildest dreams. Nigeria took me in and trusted me to lead and represent a nation of 230 plus million. From a boy born and raised in the Netherlands, to the Oyinbo Wall and eventually Skippo, is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart.”

A decorated international career

With 83 caps, five major tournaments, three medals, and multiple records, Troost-Ekong leaves behind one of the most remarkable modern Super Eagles careers. He reflected with gratitude:

“To have achieved 83 senior caps, played in 5 major tournaments, won 3 medals, and broken a few records, I’ve really lived my dream.”

His milestones span a Rio 2016 Olympic bronze medal, the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and three AFCON tournaments, including the unforgettable 2023 edition where he captained Nigeria to the final and earned Player of the Tournament.

“Being able to lead Nigeria through the 2023 AFCON, scoring in the final, and being named Player of the Tournament, was something so special… Becoming the highest-scoring defender in AFCON history is an honour I share with every teammate who was part of those moments.”

A leader respected across generations

Players who have trained and fought alongside Troost-Ekong consistently describe him as a calm, respected figure one whose leadership elevated the team both on and off the pitch.
He showed the same humility in his letter:

“I’m at peace knowing that throughout all these milestones, I gave everything I had… to try and inspire the next generation, the same way I was inspired by the legends I looked up to.”

Troost-Ekong also made clear that his retirement is driven by a desire to give room for emerging leaders within the squad:

“Watching them grow into leaders, time has come to pass on the responsibility, to pass on the opportunity, and to pass on the captaincy.”

Passing the torch, he said, is not the end but the continuation of a legacy and positive work:

“As a custodian of an iconic shirt, I’ve always known it was only borrowed. Now it’s the turn of the next generation to continue to write their own story.”

A powerful message to Nigerians everywhere

A proud representative of the diaspora returning home to serve, Troost-Ekong highlighted what the national team taught him about being Nigerian:

“That tournament taught me what it truly means to be Nigerian, that in adversity, we come together, we hustle, we fight through the pain, and we rise.”

He offered heartfelt thanks to coaches, staff, teammates, and especially fans:

“To the Nigerian fans, the heartbeat of Nigerian football, your support has carried me through every high and every challenge. I will stand with you as you stood with me.”

A legacy that continues beyond football

Though retiring from the pitch, Troost-Ekong affirmed that his work in Nigerian communities including through The Troost-Ekong Foundation remains unwavering:

“This isn’t a final goodbye. My work within Nigerian communities continues, just as my love and passion for the team will never fade. Supporting the Nigerian community is one of my biggest passions and the Troost-Ekong Foundation, will continue to give young Nigerian’s a better future; I would like to create more pathways for these young people.”
I will also be supporting the team and there at the end of the phone for them, whenever they need me, always.”

The end of an era, the beginning of a new chapter

Closing his letter, the Super Eagles captain reflected on the depth of his commitment:

“The last decade has been filled with commitment, pride, and unforgettable memories. Wearing the Super Eagles shirt has been more than playing football. It has been a duty, a privilege, and an honour.”

With his retirement, Nigeria bids farewell to one of its most respected modern captains an athlete who led with courage, represented the nation with integrity, and leaves behind a legacy that will inspire generations of Super Eagles to come.
