Pyspic Photography: A West African Perspective for an Africa Told Differently

By Juliet Umeh

For more than a decade, Papa Youssoupha Seck, known by his artistic name Pyspic Photography, has established himself as one of the leading figures in photography in West Africa. Driven by a deep passion for imagery, he began his professional career in 2010 and has, over the years, developed a strong visual identity where aesthetic excellence meets deeply human storytelling. Based in Conakry since 2016, he is now recognized as one of the most influential photographers in the sub-region, both for the quality of his vision and the consistency and impact of his work.

Through his lens, Pyspic Photography promotes a resolutely positive, dignified, and contemporary vision of Africa. Far removed from the reductive representations often associated with the continent, his work seeks to reveal the richness of cultures, the beauty of everyday life, and the strength of individuals. Each image is conceived as a visual narrative, with humanity at its core, contributing to the reclaiming of Africa’s image through an African perspective.

This approach is powerfully reflected in his ongoing commitment to highlighting African women, a central theme in his work. Through sensitive and powerful portraits, he celebrates feminine strength, resilience, and elegance, making photography a true tool for social, cultural, and identity-based expression.

Recognition of his talent has been marked by several awards and exhibitions across Africa and internationally. He is notably a laureate of a competition organized by Paris Match Afrique, a distinction that highlights the quality of his vision and the impact of his work. His photography has also been exhibited in Spain as part of an exhibition organized with the FAAP (African Federation for Photographic Art), as well as internationally through acclaimed series such as Gorée en couleur and L’Œuvre aux Noirs. These experiences affirm the universal dimension of his approach and his ability to convey a contemporary and inspiring vision of Africa.

A versatile photographer, Papa Youssoupha Seck moves seamlessly between portrait, fashion, corporate, event, sports, culinary, and landscape photography. This diversity of practice, combined with strong artistic coherence, allows him to collaborate with institutions, companies, media outlets, and public figures, while maintaining a distinctive visual signature rooted in authenticity and storytelling.

In 2025, Pyspic Photography reached a major milestone in his career by being selected as a member of the international jury of the ECOFEST Festival in Dakar, for the categories of photography, painting, and sculpture. This distinction, within a major regional event dedicated to West African arts and culture, recognizes his expertise, critical eye, and role as a key reference in the African artistic landscape.

Today, Papa Youssoupha Seck embodies a generation of African artists committed to building a positive, proud, and confident African visual narrative. Through the strength of his work, his human engagement, and the consistency of his artistic standards, Pyspic Photography stands as one of the leading photographers in West Africa, actively contributing to the continent’s cultural influence on the international stage.
