Kaduna — The Northern Coalition of Socio-Political Groups (NCSPG) has expressed concern over reports circulating about the possible arrest or detention of a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, urging authorities to ensure strict adherence to due process and constitutional provisions.

The coalition made its position known on Sunday during a press conference held at Arewa House, Kaduna.

Speaking to journalists, President of the NCSPG, Comrade Musa Mohammed, said the group had received information suggesting that Malami may be undergoing questioning by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), but stressed that it had no official confirmation of his detention or the circumstances surrounding the reports.

Mohammed stated that, should any individual be in the custody of law-enforcement agencies, the Constitution clearly outlines the procedures to be followed, including respect for personal liberty and the right to fair hearing as provided under Sections 35 and 36 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

“Our concern is not directed at any institution but at the need to uphold constitutional safeguards. If any citizen is under investigation, the law provides clear guidelines that must be respected,” he said.

The coalition cautioned against speculation and misinformation, noting that clarity from relevant authorities would help prevent unnecessary tension and public misunderstanding.

Mohammed added that the group considered it important for Nigerians to distinguish between lawful investigations and unverified claims circulating in the public space, particularly when such reports involve prominent public figures.

He further noted that the NCSPG was not aware of any formal charges filed against Malami or any court proceedings involving him, emphasising that this position was based solely on information available to the group at the time.

According to him, transparency and timely communication by institutions charged with law enforcement would reinforce public confidence and dispel rumours.

“A democracy functions best when institutions operate openly and within the bounds of the law. Citizens are entitled to information that reassures them that due process is being followed,” Mohammed said.

The coalition reiterated that Malami, like all Nigerians, is entitled to the presumption of innocence and fair treatment under the law.

NCSPG called on relevant authorities to continue to act within the framework of the Constitution and to provide clarification where necessary in the public interest.

Efforts to obtain official confirmation or comment from the EFCC on the reports were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
