Deborah Agbonika, Publisher of Akoni TV in Kogi State, awarded scholarships to 30 boys of the Universal Basic Education Secondary School, Gadumo, during the weekend.
Through her Akoni Care Foundation, Agbonika also donated 500 books to students and 300 menstrual pads to female students, aiming to promote proper personal hygiene and support adolescent girls’ education.
Addressing the students, Agbonika reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to the welfare and development of both boys and girls.
“Empowering young people is central to building a healthier and more productive society. Akoni Care Foundation will continue to empower both the girl-child and the boy-child so that together they can contribute to the nation of our dreams,” she said.
She added that the scholarship programme encourages boys to focus on their education, describing education as the best legacy for their future.
Agbonika also urged the girls to make proper use of the sanitary pads, emphasizing that good menstrual hygiene prevents infections and unnecessary absenteeism from school.
Earlier, facilitator Oyiza Bello educated the girls on menstrual health and self-confidence, advising, “When you are on your period, change your pads every six hours, bathe at least twice daily, and avoid using soap inside the vagina—wash only the outer part of your body. You are beautiful, smart, and the leaders of tomorrow.”
The Principal of the school, Mrs. Christiana Basagi, expressed gratitude to the Foundation, noting, “This initiative will go a long way in reducing the financial burden on parents and improving the wellbeing of our students. We are grateful to Akoni Care Foundation for remembering our children.”
