Jennifer Akong builds cross-continental fashion brand as African designers gain global attention

By Adetutu Audu

As African designers continue to shape global conversations on creativity and cultural identity, Nigerian fashion entrepreneur Jennifer Akong is emerging as one of the voices defining the business direction of the continent’s fashion industry. Akong, founder of the contemporary fashion label Mania by Jennifer, has spent nearly a decade building a brand that now serves clients across multiple countries and the African diaspora.

Expanding a Fashion Label Across Borders

Established more than ten years ago, Mania by Jennifer began as a small creative project. However, Akong quickly identified rising demand for contemporary pieces made with African prints—designs that retained cultural character while appealing to modern fashion aesthetics.

“There was a need for clothing that honoured culture without losing modern appeal,” she said.

Her relocation to the United Kingdom marked a turning point. The move exposed the brand to a broader audience, particularly among the diaspora community seeking fashion that connected them to their heritage. The label has since expanded its presence across Nigeria, the UK, Namibia and international diaspora markets, gaining visibility through celebrity styling and cultural events.

A Founder Positioned at the Intersection of Creativity and Education

Akong’s influence extends beyond design. With a degree in Education, she trains emerging designers on the business and structural elements required to build sustainable fashion ventures. She also draws on six years of marketing experience, a skill she developed while growing her own brand.

Her book, The Marketing Roadmap, documents her approach to storytelling, visibility and brand building, offering guidance to designers, entrepreneurs and other creatives navigating competitive markets.

Through teaching, mentorship and content creation, Akong has become a resource within both African and UK creative networks, contributing to discussions on the business of fashion and the evolving role of creative founders.

A Reflection of Africa’s Broader Fashion Momentum

Akong’s trajectory mirrors a wider movement in African fashion, where designers are pairing creative expression with strategic business models to compete globally. Industry stakeholders note that sustainable growth now depends on a mix of market insight, operational structure and the ability to translate cultural narratives into contemporary design.

As the international market continues to take interest in Africa’s creative economy, Mania by Jennifer’s cross-continental footprint illustrates how emerging founders are redefining what it means to build fashion brands with both cultural depth and commercial potential.
