…as Defence Minister, Calls for Stronger Leadership
By Ibrahim Hassan-Wuyo
The Arewa Youth Alliance for Progress and Development (AYAPAD) has welcomed the nomination of General Christopher Musa as Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, describing the appointment as a positive step toward strengthening the country’s response to insecurity.
In a statement signed by National President James Ishaku and National Secretary Mohammed Garba, the group said General Musa’s professional experience, particularly in counterinsurgency operations, has inspired renewed optimism among citizens.
“His nomination offers hope to Nigerians who desire a more coordinated and effective security management structure,” the statement said.
AYAPAD, however, expressed concern over the continued role of Bello Matawalle as Minister of State for Defence, suggesting that broader adjustments in the ministry could improve coordination amid ongoing security challenges. The group referenced recent incidents, including the abduction of students and teachers from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, as evidence of the need for unified leadership.
The youth group urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that the defence team is fully aligned with the administration’s security objectives. AYAPAD also indicated that it may mobilise Northern youths for peaceful demonstrations if reforms are not implemented, emphasizing that its goal is dialogue and constructive engagement, not confrontation.
“This is not the time for political considerations,” the statement added. “Nigeria needs the strongest and most cohesive leadership to address its security challenges.”
