The Africa Network of Professional Counsellors (ANEPCO) has successfully held its 10th Africa Counsellors Summit and induction ceremony in Lagos.

According to a statement, the summit focused on the evolving challenges of mental health under the theme, “New Frontiers: Trauma, Diversity and the Counsellor.”

In his welcome address, President of the body, Mr. Segun Matthew, described counsellors as the bridge between despair and hope, between confusion and clarity, and between isolation and connection.

The President noted that the theme challenges  professional counsellors to explore dimensions of the work, deepen understanding of trauma, and embrace the richness of diversity to equip themselves for the evolving realities of our clients and communities.

One of the speakers, Mutiat Olagoke, spoke on the central theme, highlighting the need for counsellors to adapt to modern societal changes and navigate the complexities of trauma in diverse communities.

Zuriel Lowe, another resource person, delivered a compelling session titled “Wounds into Wisdom: Empowering Healing through Counselling,” emphasizing how deep-seated emotional wounds can be transformed into sources of strength and wisdom through professional guidance.

In the words of Kemi Tony-Akinwunmi, a guest speaker,  counsellors need to rethink and re-evaluate their systems and structure. This will enable them to get new perspectives to better serve their clients.

Finally, Foluwaso Adebobuyi emphasised on the importance of creating  safe spaces as Counsellors. He noted that having biases can damage therapeutic alliance.

Among the many impactful activities, the summit featured a grounding  session, providing practical therapeutic experiences for attendees to process and regulate their emotions.

A major highlight of the event was the formal induction of over 40 new members and 15 Members who got their annual licensure from the association, marking a significant growth in the network of professional counsellors in Africa.

The event was graced by key executives of the association and notable personalities, that includes the Vice President, Temitayo Owosina; the General Secretary, Ajijola Shakira; and the Public Relations Officer, Ajiginni Kolawole, amongst others.

Organisers noted that the summit was not just an event but a call to renew practice, reimagine methods, and learn new approaches to expand the capacity to hold space for others.
