Ogun 2027: Group urges Senator Adeola to join guber race

By James Ogunnaike, Abeokuta

A socio-political group in Ogun State, ‘MATA YAYI’, has called on the Senator representing Ogun West, Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi), to contest the 2027 governorship election in the state.

The group appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and other political stakeholders in the State to support Senator Adeola’s ambition, noting that he possesses the capacity and experience to serve the entire state effectively.

Speaking at a gathering in Ifo, Ifo local government area of the State, the group’s convener, Mathew Adeyinka Taiwo, said the call became necessary in view of the Adeola’s “remarkable developmental interventions” across both urban and rural communities in Ogun State, despite representing only Ogun West senatorial district.

Taiwo said the group is prepared to mobilise at least 30,000 votes for Adeola if he secures the APC ticket, adding that the move would further strengthen the party’s chances in the 2027 elections.

According to the communiqué signed by Chief Taiwo, the endorsement is rooted in Senator Adeola’s “giant strides in infrastructure, education empowerment, and other dividends of democracy” which, the group said, cut across all zones of the state.

He stated, “the people of Ifo local government; men, women, youths, traditional leaders and stakeholders do solemnly call on our dear son, Senator Adeola Olamilekan, to show interest in contesting the Ogun State governorship in 2027.”

The group lamented what it termed a history of development being concentrated in the home regions of successive governors, arguing that such patterns hinder the state’s collective growth.

It said Senator Adeola had demonstrated “competence, capacity, and passion for inclusive governance” since joining Ogun politics.

Taiwo added that more than 30,000 registered voters, along with 10,000 newly registered voters, were ready to support Adeola in 2027. A committee has also been set up to mobilise eligible but previously inactive voters.

The group further appealed to President Tinubu, the APC national leadership, former Governor Olusegun Osoba, Governor Abiodun, and other political leaders to endorse Adeola for the governorship ticket.

In the same communiqué, the group urged President Tinubu to strengthen the nation’s security architecture to forestall attempts by “saboteurs” to undermine Nigeria’s democracy.

It also encouraged the president to seek re-election in 2027, praising what it described as the positive direction of his economic reforms.

“Since May 29, 2023, Nigeria has embraced a renewed aspiration, and though challenges remain, President Tinubu is tirelessly addressing them. We believe he must be ready to sacrifice another four years for the service of Nigeria,” the group said.

The communiqué concluded with a reaffirmation of the group’s commitment to advancing Senator Adeola’s governorship ambition and supporting the continuity of President Tinubu’s administration.
