Mohbad
Mohbad’s widow, Wunmi Aloba last week reported at the Force Criminal Investigation Department of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja following a petition by the United Advocates Group, UAG.
The UAG had petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, raising concerns regarding the way the Lagos Police Command treated the murder of the late singer.
In a memo CB/7000/IGP.SEC/ABJ/Vol.740/195 signed by DCP Asuquo Effiong, psc, dated 15 August 2024, he had advised the legal section of the police to look into the matter.
The United Advocates Group International, a coalition of committed human rights activists, appreciated the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force for responding to public calls and petitions regarding the controversial investigation into the untimely death of Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.
Earlier, one of the suspects, Ayobami Sodiq (alias Spending) had been arrested and flown to Abuja.
The group, which said other suspects should turn themselves in or risk arrest, commended the Nigerian Police for their attention and positive response to their appeal for a fresh investigation.
Mohbad reportedly died on 12th September 2023, shortly after a performance in Ikorodu, and was buried the following day.
Following public outcry and mounting concern, the Lagos State Government ordered the exhumation of his body for an autopsy and toxicological analysis.
Unfortunately, the examination failed to determine a conclusive cause of death.
The group expressed dissatisfaction with the initial investigation conducted by the Lagos State authorities and the Force Criminal Investigation Department, FCID, Panti, Lagos. In pursuit of justice, the group visited the Force Headquarters in Abuja on August 10, 2024, and submitted a five-page petition to the IGP, calling for a fresh and thorough investigation.
Their petition was in addition to one submitted by the late singer’s father through his former lawyer, Barrister Taiwo Odumosu.
The group became more actively involved in the case after the father’s legal counsel was disengaged due to internal disagreements.
The United Advocates Group subsequently filed follow-up petitions and sustained communication with the IGP’s office throughout August 2024 to date.
In a release signed by Barr. Oluwatosin Adefajo, the group recounted their experiences during this period, including extensive interactions with the Force Public Relations Officer and the Legal Unit, which culminated in an internal review and positive recommendation to the IGP.
However, the group also expressed disappointment with the lack of cooperation from FCID Panti and the Lagos Police Command, who failed to provide updates or release certified copies of the investigation report. To strengthen their appeal, they sourced a copy of a public statement issued by the then Lagos CP Owohunwa from the National Library.
The group expressed satisfaction with the findings presented by the Force PRO to the IGP, which shed significant light on the case and supported the need for a reinvestigation.
In March this year, they submitted second and third petitions, which the police acknowledged with a request for additional evidence.
Undeterred, the group continued their efforts in April and May by engaging private investigators and collaborating with their legal team to gather new evidence.
They described the overwhelming joy they felt when the IGP approved a fresh investigation in April 2025.
They praised the professionalism of the police team that conducted the three-week investigation, which ultimately led to the identification and apprehension of the suspects in the case. The group pledged continued support by providing relevant information to aid further investigation.
Once again, the United Advocates Group expressed its deep appreciation to the Nigerian Police Force, the IGP, and all officers involved in the case. Their professionalism and commitment reaffirm the Nigerian Police’s status as a pillar of justice and hope.
The campaign was led by the trio of human rights activists: Engr Moses, The Bossman, One with God, Lady Rhines, and Barr. Leke Odugbesan. The group also thanked the donors who provided financial support.
They also extended gratitude to their dedicated legal counsel, who worked tirelessly from August 2024 to July 2025, as well as to government officials (both serving and retired), international observers, and organisations that lent their voices and support to the cause of justice for Ilerioluwa Promise Aloba.
