The Lagos State House of Assembly has aligned with the global community in marking International Men’s Day, spotlighting the critical role men play in family life and national development.

The motion, moved by Princess Omolara Olumegbon-Lawal during plenary, underscored the importance of celebrating men who demonstrate responsibility, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to the growth of their families and society.

Olumegbon noted that the annual event, held every November 19, serves as a reminder that men remain central role models whose values and conduct shape future generations. “Men who stand firm in their duties contribute immensely to societal development,” she said.

Supporting the motion, Aro Moshood lamented that the efforts and struggles of men often go unnoticed. Drawing from personal experience, he recalled how enthusiastically his children celebrate their mother during International Women’s Day.

He stressed that men equally deserve recognition for their sacrifices, leadership and resilience.

In his contribution, Stephen Ogundipe urged men to start celebrating themselves without waiting for validation. He suggested that the House consider introducing a bill that will institutionalize the observance of International Men’s Day in Lagos State.

Responding, Speaker Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa commended the initiative and called on men across the State to continue upholding honour, integrity and responsibility.

According to him, the family and the nation depend heavily on the strength, guidance and discipline of men.

“Men are supposed to be role models to their children at all times. They must remain upright, diligent and committed to securing a better future for their families,” Obasa stated. He added that integrity remains the foundation upon which society accords respect to men, warning them against criminality and behaviours that undermine their dignity.

In another development, the House also joined the global observance of World Children’s Day, celebrated every November 20.

Meanwhile, lawmakers expressed solidarity with the Government and people of Kebbi State following the recent kidnapping incident. They condemned the rising wave of insecurity and observed a minute of silence for victims of Boko Haram attacks in Northern Nigeria.

The Speaker directed the Clerk to forward condolence messages to the Kebbi State Government, the affected communities and the Presidency as the House renewed its call for intensified nationwide security measures.
