Nigerian reggae fusion act, King Swazo, is set to release a new single titled ‘Squiz’, featuring singer Sugarboy, on December 5, 2025.
Speaking on the Southplug produced collaboration, King Swazo said the connection with Sugarboy happened naturally.
“I met Sugarboy at an event. We vibed and he liked my style, so he asked that we link up for a collaboration, and I keyed into it,” he said.
The singer explained that the record’s emotional undertone wasn’t a planned decision but one that emerged organically during the recording process.
“That was Sugarboy’s idea—to make the tone softer. You’ll see that in the BTS video,” he added.
‘Squiz,’ according to Swazo, mirrors the energy behind his forthcoming EP “Life & Vibez,” which he describes as an expression of his consciousness and creative depth.
“My sound is a reflection of who I am and what I believe in. Reggae music is conscious—it spreads love and light, and that’s what I stand for,” he said.
On why he chose to lean into reggae at a time when Afrobeats dominates the charts, King Swazo said he is simply following his own path.
“I started as an Afrobeats artist before switching to reggae because I wanted to create a unique brand that resonates with my consciousness. Now I’m merging both sounds to create balance. I believe the audience will receive it well because I only dish out good music,” he noted.
For Sugarboy, the collaboration was an easy decision.
“I love King Swazo’s style—it carries a blend of Afro fusion and root reggae that upholds culture and values. Such genres preach peace and balance to humanity,” he said.
He added that what stood out for him was the simplicity and consciousness of the record.
“It’s simple, pure, and easy to connect with. I’m a conscious singer myself, so it resonates deeply with me,” Sugarboy concluded.
