Rural women in Adamawa State have shown the power of collective effort, saving over ₦53 million through a community-based savings and loan initiative.

Over 450 women from communities around the Gashaka-Gumti National Park have pooled their earnings over the years to build small businesses, acquire land, and fund their children’s education, transforming their families’ fortunes.

Joy Emmanuel, one of the participants, said, “We used to think saving was impossible with what we earned. But when we started contributing little by little, we saw the change. This programme helped us discover our strength and entrepreneurial spirit. We’re determined to keep growing and supporting each other.”

Hauwa Haruna added, “The transformation goes beyond money. We’ve gained confidence and independence. Now, we make decisions in our homes and communities.”

The women received structure, training, and guidance through a two-year empowerment initiative facilitated by the Africa Nature Investors (ANI) Foundation in partnership with Roshan Renewables.

Deputy Project Manager of ANI Foundation, David Peter, explained that the programme began in 2023 to reduce rural dependence on the natural resources of Gashaka-Gumti National Park. “What started as a small experiment has become a transformative journey. These women are now financially independent, and that independence is helping to protect the park. Families that once relied on encroaching park lands now run businesses and send their children to school.”

He noted that one group of just 30 women saved over ₦5 million, reflecting their discipline and commitment.

Roshan Renewables’ State Coordinator, Happy Amos, praised the women for sustaining the effort despite economic challenges. “When we began two years ago, most of them had no steady income. Now, they own assets, manage enterprises, and have built a culture of saving. This initiative has improved livelihoods and restored women’s dignity and sense of purpose.”
