ABUJA — The Network of Digital Newspaper Editors (NDNE) has applauded the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for what it described as a bold and transformational infrastructure drive that is rapidly reshaping Nigeria’s capital city.
In a statement signed by its Director of Strategy and Communications, Mr. Uche Nnadozie, the group noted that within just one month, the FCT Administration under Wike and the Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, has commissioned 17 major projects. These include strategic city centre roads and bridges, rural community access routes in satellite towns, and ultra-modern bus terminals.
The editors described the pace of development as “unprecedented,” with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu personally commissioning some of the projects, including the newly unveiled Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, which they hailed as a symbol of Abuja’s rebranding and modernization.
“Visitors to the FCT today would hardly recognize some areas if they last visited just a year ago,” the statement read. “Roads, bridges, and terminals have sprung up seemingly overnight, reflecting a new urgency in public administration.”
NDNE further praised Wike’s hands-on leadership and rigorous supervision, noting that the minister is often seen inspecting project sites late at night or in the early hours of the morning to ensure adherence to deadlines.
While commending the achievements, the editors also advised the FCT Administration to prioritize operational efficiency, especially in managing the new bus terminals. They called for the establishment of a safe, affordable, and reliable mass transit system to eliminate criminal activities like the notorious “one chance” robberies and enhance daily commuting for residents.
The group also lauded Wike’s intervention in resolving lingering issues in the primary education sector, which led to the return of striking teachers to classrooms on Wednesday.
“As watchdogs of governance, we commend the performance so far. The Wike-led team has shown that with commitment and proper oversight, government projects can be initiated and completed within months — a departure from the norm of abandoned or delayed infrastructure across the country,” the editors stated.
Looking ahead, the NDNE expressed optimism that with continued momentum, Abuja is poised to become a modern capital city on par with global standards.
