Nigeria’s former President Olusegun Obasanjo has paid tribute to the late Professor Sanya Onabamiro during a commemorative ceremony at the University of Ibadan, marking 40 years since the renowned scientist’s death.
Obasanjo, on Monday in Ibadan, praised the university’s decision to honour the renowned scientist by naming the administrative block of the Postgraduate College after him, calling Onabamiro an “icon.”
He stated, “In our culture, we never forget our source. A river that forgets its source will dry up,” emphasising the importance of acknowledging contributions to society.
“Sweet is the memory of the righteous. Professor Onabamiro was diligent and righteous,” Obasanjo said.
Also in his tribute, former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun acknowledged Onabamiro’s significant role in education policy, particularly in the Western region.
“The academic world recognises his contribution to the sector, especially in the area of research,” Amosun noted, highlighting Onabamiro’s research on Guinea worm.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, underscored Onabamiro’s groundbreaking contributions, stating, “The decision of the management to name the Administrative building of the Postgraduate College after him is in recognition of his contribution to the education sector.”
While responding to the various tributes, one of the late professor’s children, Mrs. Enitan Onabamiro, reflected on her father’s legacy, describing him as a “great family man who was brilliant and committed to excellence.”
She highlighted his advocacy for the Yoruba language, saying, “If that policy can be brought back to life, it will do us well.”
The ceremony concluded with a commitment to uphold Onabamiro’s legacy, ensuring that future generations remember his profound impact on education and policy in Nigeria.
