Nigeria and Germany have pledged to strengthen bilateral cooperation in energy, trade, and migration following high-level talks in Berlin between Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and his German counterpart, Minister Johann Wadephul.

In a press statement signed by Alkasim Abdulkadir, Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy to the Hon. Minister on Friday, the meeting reaffirmed Germany’s recognition of Nigeria as a strategic partner in sub-Saharan Africa and its second-largest trading partner.

Discussions focused on expanding the German-Nigerian Energy Partnership, which now includes hydrogen technology, and improving legal migration pathways.

Tuggar emphasized Nigeria’s goal to export talent, not people, stressing the need for structured migration that creates jobs and curbs irregular movement.

Germany’s Minister, Johann Wadephul, described Nigeria as a key partner and highlighted new areas of cooperation in renewable energy, critical minerals, and vocational training.

Tuggar also met with other top German officials and development leaders, including the Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Svenja Radovan, and was formally invited to the 2025 Berlin Global Dialogue, reinforcing Nigeria’s growing influence in global development conversations.
