ABUJA – Leading Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Connected Development (CODE) and Hopecare Grow Initiative, have called for urgent policy reforms and increased government accountability to secure a brighter future for Nigerian children, irrespective of race, class, or religion.
The appeal was made during the 2025 Children’s Day celebration event held in Abuja, themed ‘Building a Better World.’
Speaking at the event, Madu Ijeoma, Chief Executive Officer of Hopecare Grow Initiative, emphasized the transformative power of education, stating, “If you train a child, you train a village.”
She highlighted the importance of informal learning and proper education in helping children realize their full potentials.
“Every child deserves a better future, and in whatever little way you can, with informal learning and proper education, teach a child always,” Ijeoma added.
She also showcased the program’s focus on environmental sustainability, where children displayed creative projects on reducing, reusing, and recycling.
“They are fantastic children, so we should be seeing a lot of creativity today,” she remarked.
Hamza Lawal, Chief Executive Officer of Connected Development, echoed similar sentiments, stressing that every child has the right to achieve their dreams.
Reflecting on his own upbringing, Lawal said, “My parents sacrificed their time, energy, and resources to instill the right values in me. Today, I commit to advocating for children so they can be what they want to be.”
Lawal further urged children to enjoy their childhood while calling on families and the government to provide the necessary support for their growth.
“I believe that every child has the right to be what they want to be as long as they have a family. So, take this moment and enjoy being a child before you get to this part where you take plenty responsibilities,” he said.
The event also highlighted the importance of inclusivity and national unity in addressing child welfare issues.
Both organizations emphasized the need for policies that bridge ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic divides, ensuring equal opportunities for all Nigerian children.
The call for action aligns with global development goals, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on quality education, reduced inequalities, and environmental sustainability.
The CSOs urged the government to prioritize child welfare in its policies and budgets, ensuring a brighter and more sustainable future for the next generation.
