Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed claims that Senator Sani Musa (APC, Niger East), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, was embarrassed or unable to define the word “harmonized” during a recent Senate plenary.

In a personally signed statement titled “Clarification on Misleading Reports Regarding Senate Proceedings,” Akpabio described the viral reports, particularly those from Linda Ikeji’s Blog, as false and misleading.

“My attention has been drawn to reports circulating across social media platforms and online blogs… which falsely suggest that Senator Sani Musa was ‘rubbished’ during a recent Senate plenary for allegedly failing to define the word ‘harmonized,’” Akpabio stated.

He clarified that no such incident occurred. “Senator Musa was neither embarrassed nor unable to respond. At the time he was called upon, a point of order was raised by Senator Abdul Ningi, which, in accordance with our rules, required immediate procedural attention. The session continued without any breach of decorum,” Akpabio explained.

The Senate President further praised Senator Musa’s contributions to the legislature, noting his leadership roles as Chairman of the Joint Committee on Finance and Chairman of the Conference Committee that successfully harmonized the Tax Reform Bills — a feat applauded by both legislative chambers and stakeholders.

“The Nigerian Senate operates on the principles of respect, order, and integrity. While public engagement is welcome, it is essential that commentary, especially from influential media platforms, is grounded in fact, not sensationalism,” Akpabio emphasized.

He urged the media to uphold responsible journalism in their coverage of National Assembly proceedings and members.
