The World Sustainable Development Goals Organization (WSDGsO) has announced the appointment of His Excellency Liu Weijun as its China Country Representative, alongside His Excellency Akanno Collins Chinedu as Deputy Country Representative, marking a significant step in the organization’s global efforts to accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The appointments, effective from December 30, 2024, signal WSDGsO’s dedication to fostering sustainable development and social transformation within China.
In his acceptance speech, Liu Weijun expressed his gratitude and committed to a four-year tenure focused on advancing the organization’s five core pillars: Touching Lives, Transforming Societies, Healing Souls, Uniting Nations, and Changing the World. “I am deeply honored to take on this responsibility,” Liu stated. “I pledge to dedicate my efforts to ensuring that China plays a leading role in achieving the SDGs, aligning our national policies with these global objectives.”
A statement from WSDGsO emphasized the critical nature of Liu’s role, particularly given China’s global significance. “In an era marked by pressing global challenges such as climate change, poverty, and inequality, the role of local and international leadership in sustainable development has never been more critical,” the statement read. “His Excellency Liu, as China’s country representative, is tasked with embodying and promoting the values enshrined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.”
The organization outlined several key expectations for Liu’s tenure, including aligning China’s national policies with the SDGs and fostering international cooperation. “One of Liu’s primary expectations amongst many others is to ensure that China’s national policies align with the SDGs,” the statement noted. “His presence at international forums provides an excellent opportunity to share China’s progress and innovations, which could galvanize other countries to enhance their commitment to sustainable practices.”
Furthermore, WSDGsO highlighted the importance of addressing China’s domestic challenges through the lens of the SDGs. “China faces immense domestic challenges, including environmental degradation, socioeconomic inequality, and public health crises,” the organization stated. “Liu is expected to focus not only on international forums but also on how the SDGs can address domestic issues. For instance, the SDG related to quality education (SDG 4) is particularly pertinent in China, where disparities between urban and rural education access remain stark.”
Liu assured that his leadership would prioritize creating a more inclusive and sustainable society in China, aligning with WSDGsO’s broader vision. “We will work tirelessly to ensure that sustainable development is not just a policy, but a reality for all Chinese citizens,” Liu affirmed.
In a similar vein, Deputy Country Representative Akanno Jude Collins Chinedu pledged his full support to Liu Weijun. “I am committed to working alongside His Excellency Liu to ensure that WSDGsO’s aims and objectives are successfully achieved in China,” Akanno stated.
WSDGsO continues to expand its global reach, appointing dedicated leaders to drive change across the world. With Liu Weijun and Akanno Jude Collins Chinedu at the helm in China, the organization is poised to deepen its impact and foster lasting positive change in the country.
