Smallholder farmers need technology-driven solutions – Ohuruogu

…set to revolutionize agricultural mechanization

By Jimoh Babatunde

Despite agriculture being Nigeria’s economic backbone, 63% of the country’s population is said to live in multidimensional poverty, with most in rural areas relying on low-productivity, subsistence farming.

Available statistics show that only 16 percent of smallholder farmers have access to mechanized equipment because of high costs, limited financing, and weak supply chains.

To change the narrative and contribute its quota to the nation’s food security, TracTrac Mechanization Services Limited, a Nigerian agricultural mechanization service provider is transforming farming for smallholder farmers in Nigeria by bridging the gap between farmers and modern mechanisation.

Godson Ohuruogu, the CEO of TracTrac Mechanization Services, said they are set to provide smallholder farmers with the tools, knowledge, and financial solutions they need to succeed in a modern agricultural landscape.

He said through its technology-driven solutions, financial accessibility, and strategic partnerships, TracTrac is enhancing farm productivity, promoting economic growth, and driving sustainable agricultural development.

He said that the organization is deploying tractors and mechanisation services to over 135,000 farmers this year, increasing efficiency, productivity, and access to sustainable farming solutions while supporting over 3,900 young MSPs.

According to him, by leveraging technology, strategic partnerships, and policy advocacy, TracTrac is not just delivering mechanization services but also building a resilient ecosystem that empowers farmers for future generations.

“Our mission at TracTrac is to provide smallholder farmers with the tools, knowledge, and financial solutions they need to succeed in a modern agricultural landscape. By leveraging technology, strategic partnerships, and policy advocacy, we are not just delivering mechanization services but building a resilient ecosystem that empowers farmers for future generations.

“We use our IoT-enabled TracTrac-Plus platform to empower smallholder farmers with seamless access to mechanization services, agronomic insights, and financial tools tailored to their needs.

“TracTrac enhances productivity, reduces labour intensity, and fosters sustainable agricultural practices by bridging the mechanization gap.

While speaking on how TracTrac is empowering farmers with digital innovation, he said that TracTrac’s success is its TracTrac-Plus platform, a real-time digital booking system connecting farmers with Mechanization Service Providers (MSPs), enabling real-time asset tracking, farm mapping, payment, demand aggregation and order fulfilment.

The technology according to him optimizes service delivery by reducing delays, increasing mechanization access, and ensuring efficient use of resources.

Speaking further he said that TracTrac also addresses gender and youth gaps in mechanization by ensuring that 50 percent of newly trained MSPs are women, stressing that young entrepreneurs within the ages of 18 and 35 have the resources to establish sustainable mechanization businesses, creating new employment opportunities and fostering inclusive growth in the sector.

“With a strong commitment to gender equality and youth empowerment, Tractrac actively promotes the participation of women and young people in mechanized agriculture.”

Beyond service delivery, Ohuruogu pointed out that TracTrac collaborates with key stakeholders, including the National Centre for Agricultural Mechanization (NCAM), Women in Mechanization Association (WIMA), Nigeria Economic Summit Group, and other private sector players, to advocate for mechanization policies.

The efforts according to him aim to create an enabling environment for investment, job creation and long-term mechanization sustainability.

“Through strategic partnerships with organizations like the NCAM) and the WIMA, TracTrac advocates for policy innovation, capacity building, and financial inclusion to strengthen the agricultural ecosystem.

“With mechanization driving food security, rural employment, and agriculture, TracTrac remains committed to scaling its impact across the country and beyond.
