Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, made a notable appearance at the annual Ayakoro festival (Eyal Obeyin) in Bayelsa State over the weekend, where he reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to the development of the Niger Delta.

Ayakoro, a riverside community in Ogbia Local Government Area, is the hometown of Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). The festival, a historic cultural celebration, unites the people of the community with distinguished guests from across the country.

Serving as the chairman of the occasion, Okpebholo expressed appreciation for the administration’s efforts in delivering the Renewed Hope agenda. He highlighted ongoing developmental strides in the Niger Delta and emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage to promote unity and progress.

In his remarks, Dr. Ogbuku thanked the Obanema-in-Council, the festival’s organizing committee, and the entire Ayakoro community for their dedication to sustaining the cherished tradition. He underscored the role of cultural heritage in strengthening communal bonds and fostering a sense of identity among the people.

Ogbuku also extended gratitude to dignitaries and guests who attended, making this year’s festival even more remarkable. He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance both the cultural and socio-economic development of the region.

Additionally, he urged Niger Delta communities to safeguard projects in their domains, stressing the importance of community ownership in preventing project abandonment.

“The communities play a crucial role in ensuring the successful implementation of impactful projects carried out by the NDDC,” Ogbuku said. “We encourage community engagement and participation in the development process. If communities protect the facilities built for them, they will benefit in the long run. Likewise, supporting contractors rather than making their work difficult will ensure timely project completion.”

The festival was also attended by Senator Benson Sunday Agadaga, representing Bayelsa East, along with traditional rulers and other notable dignitaries.

The event featured vibrant cultural displays, including traditional dances, masquerade performances, and exhibitions celebrating the rich heritage of the Ayakoro people.
