Senate outrage: Akpabio must go – Ajaka

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio

…Kogi Ex-Guber Candidate Calls for Senate President’s Removal Over ‘Autocratic Actions’ Against Sen. Natasha-Uduaghan

By Boluwaji Obahopo, Lokoja

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) gubernatorial candidate in the last Kogi State election, Murtala Yakubu Ajaka, has strongly condemned what he described as the “display of legislative autocracy and rascality” by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, following his actions against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District.

In a statement released on Thursday, Ajaka accused Akpabio of lacking respect for democratic values and promoting undemocratic practices that undermine the Senate’s independence and credibility.

“In a democracy, the legislative arm of government is critical to upholding democratic values such as inclusion and tolerance. However, the Senate under Akpabio’s leadership has shown a troubling pattern of autocratic behavior, as seen in the recent viral video. His actions against Senator Natasha not only diminish the dignity of his colleague but also reinforce growing concerns about the Senate’s lack of independence, disregard for the constitution, and violation of the rule of law,” Ajaka stated.

Ajaka stressed that Nigerians expect a Senate that is accountable and responsive to their needs. He warned that denying elected representatives the right to speak on behalf of their constituencies, as witnessed in the viral incident, poses a serious threat to democracy.

“When elected representatives are silenced or prevented from presenting their constituency’s views at plenary, it reflects a dangerous shift toward tyranny. The future of our democracy is at stake if these undemocratic actions are left unchecked,” he warned.

He criticized Akpabio for failing to exhibit the temperament and leadership skills necessary to foster inclusivity and cooperation within the Senate.

“As a former Governor, Minister, and now Senate President, Akpabio should promote unity and fairness regardless of gender, background, or political affiliations. Unfortunately, his constant bullying of Senator Natasha is both unacceptable and disappointing—and it must stop,” Ajaka added.

Ajaka urged the Senate to take decisive action by replacing Akpabio with a competent and democratic leader who can foster inclusion and fairness.

“I call on the Senate to act swiftly and replace Akpabio with a leader who will uphold the values of democracy, treat all members with dignity, and prioritize the interests of the Nigerian people,” he said.

He warned that failing to address the Senate President’s actions could undermine the principles of justice, fairness, and respect that are essential to a thriving democracy.

“The focus of the Nigerian Senate should be on improving the lives of its citizens—not engaging in conflicts and power plays that weaken our democratic foundations,” Ajaka concluded.
