The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has called for the National Assembly, NASS, support, and cooperation in amendment of the Commission’s Act.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Act 2017 provides for the engagement of Nigerians in diaspora in the policies, projects, and participation in the development of Nigeria. This is for the purpose of utilising the human capital and material resources of diaspora Nigerians towards the overall socio-economic development of the nation.
Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, made the call when she led the NiDCOM delegation on a courtesy visit to the newly appointed Chairthe Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs, Sen. Natasha Akpoti.
The NiDCOM boss briefed the committee’s Chairman on the Commission’s activities since inception, saying that it has been ensuring engagement with Nigerians abroad and their general welfare.
Dabiri-Erewa expressed delight in working with the new Chairman of the Committee while thanking Sen. Victor Ume-led Committee for its support and guidance in the 19 months relationship with the Committee.
“NiDCOM looks forward to working closely with the Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs to promote the welfare of Nigerians everywhere”, she said.
She used the opportunity to present copies of National Diaspora Policy, publications of previous activities of the Commission as well the 2025 NIDCOM calendar of events.
In her remarks, Senator Natasha expressed the willingness of her committee to support NiDCOM in achieving its mandate.
Akpoti assured the management of the Commission that her committee would provide support to NiDCOM in three key areas which include proper funding of its budget allocation, providing a better office space, and ensuring that the welfare of Nigerians living abroad is taken care of.
