Meet Hetty Ofugara, Nigerian woman who got promoted to commander level in US Navy

Hetty Ofugara, a native of Delta State, Nigeria, achieved a milestone when she got promoted to the rank of Commander in the United States Navy on July 1, 2021.

This accomplishment made her the ‘first Black woman’ to attain such a rank in the U.S. Navy.

In her role as Accessions Commander, Hetty Ofugara oversees the recruitment of new naval personnel, among other responsibilities.

Her promotion has been widely celebrated, with Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa describing her as an energetic, result-driven, and highly motivated officer who has made the state proud.

In December 2024, Commander Hetty Oraka-Onojeje was honored by the Ovie of Uvwie and the Uvwie community for her achievements in the U.S. Navy.

Her journey from Nigeria to a leadership position in the U.S. Navy serves as an inspiring example of dedication and excellence.
