Seasoned Process Engineer and paper industry expert, Olarinoye Ayomikun , has called for the adoption of process optimization and sustainable practices in the paper industry to reduce environmental impact and improve efficiency.

Disclosing this in a recent media statement, she underscored the need for paper manufacturers to prioritize sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Ayomikun asserted: “The paper industry can thrive by embracing a stronger focus on sustainability and health-conscious production practices.”

She noted that a key area of improvement is in the development of more eco-friendly paper products, especially when it comes to food packaging like paper plates.

Ayomikun pointed out that the migration of dyes and chemicals from paper plates into food is an under-addressed issue that has potential health implications.

“We need to continue advancing research into safer, non-toxic dyes and materials that don’t pose a risk to consumers, especially when they come into direct contact with food,” she emphasized.

In addition to improving product safety, incorporating more renewable energy into the production process and increasing the use of recycled materials in the manufacturing of paper products can help the industry thrive.

She said: “By optimizing the supply chain for sustainability and incorporating cleaner technologies, paper manufacturers can reduce their environmental footprint while ensuring the products are safe and healthy for consumers.

“The paper industry’s shift towards sustainability requires a multifaceted approach. This includes investing in research and development to create innovative, eco-friendly products, as well as implementing more efficient production processes that minimize waste and reduce energy consumption.”

Furthermore, Ayomikun opined that the industry can benefit from adopting circular economy principles, which prioritize the reuse and recycling of materials.

According to her, “By designing products and processes with recyclability and reusability in mind, paper manufacturers can significantly reduce their environmental impact.

“To achieve these goals, paper manufacturers must be willing to collaborate and share best practices.

“This can involve partnering with suppliers, researchers, and other industry stakeholders to develop new technologies and processes that support sustainability.”

Ayomikun strongly affirmed that the adoption of process optimization and sustainable practices is crucial for the paper industry’s future.

She concluded that the prioritization of sustainability and environmental responsibility will help paper manufacturers reduce their environmental footprint, improve efficiency, and create safer, more sustainable products for consumers.

Ayomikun holds multiple master’s degrees in Chemical Engineering and Paper Science, and is a certified Black Belt in Lean Six Sigma.
