ABUJA – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been urged to conduct a forensic audit of Edo State’s financial dealings from 2016 to 2024 due to concerns over transparency, procurement processes, and the state’s increasing debt profile.

Petitioners are calling for an investigation into financial transactions, project funding, and the management of state resources under the previous administration.

This petition was submitted on Monday at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja by the Coalition for Good Governance and Economic Justice in Africa.

The group, led by its Country Director, John Mayaki—who previously served as Chief Press Secretary to former Governor Godwin Obaseki—requested a review of contracts and financial decisions, particularly concerning the ₦19 billion Radisson Hotel project.

The petition alleges that 80% ownership of the project was ceded to Tribury House Limited, a company registered in 2024, despite having made no prior financial contribution, raising significant concerns about the transparency of the deal.

Further concerns were raised regarding the state’s debt, which reportedly surged between 2016 and 2024, alongside the allocation and management of a $75 million World Bank education fund.

The petition emphasised the need for clarity regarding procurement practices, the management of public-private partnerships, and the handling of state assets.

After submitting the petition, Mayaki briefed journalists at the Commission’s headquarters, stating: “The financial records of Edo State between 2016 and 2024 reveal areas that require urgent scrutiny to ensure compliance with due process and public accountability.

“We are calling on the EFCC to thoroughly investigate these issues, conduct a forensic audit of major projects, and ensure that public funds are managed in accordance with the law.”

The petitioners further requested a detailed review of projects such as the EdoBEST education initiative, the Edo Modular Refinery, ICT contracts, road infrastructure, and other significant developments.

They also called for an investigation into financial transactions involving specific companies engaged by the state government, an assessment of procurement processes, and a review of the state’s financial records.

Above all, the group urged the EFCC to take necessary action in line with its mandate, ensuring that any identified irregularities are addressed appropriately. They insisted that a forensic audit is essential for strengthening governance, promoting accountability, and safeguarding public funds.
