Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has defended his right to aspire to the governorship, stating that having such an ambition is not a sin.
Obasa made the remark on Saturday while addressing journalists at the Speaker’s Lodge in Ikeja, the state capital, shortly after his return to Nigeria.
When asked if his removal from office was linked to his rumored governorship ambition, Obasa said:
“Having the ambition to become a governor is not a sin.”
The former Speaker dismissed speculations about his intentions for the 2027 governorship race but noted that past governors of Lagos were not more qualified than he is.
“Becoming governor is secondary to me. It’s not something I’ve given serious thought to yet. However, that doesn’t mean I’m too young or lack the experience to run. Those who came before me weren’t better qualified,” he said.
Obasa emphasized that, while he has not formally declared his intention to contest for the governorship, he is confident in his qualifications and leadership experience.
“On the floor of the House, during the budget presentation, I clearly stated that I had no governorship aspirations. But that does not mean I am unqualified or inexperienced. I stand by that position,” he explained.
He further challenged anyone to provide evidence that he had sought their support for a governorship bid.
“In all of Lagos, let any leader or individual come forward and claim that Obasa approached them to say he wants to become governor,” he added.
Obasa also criticized the process leading to his removal as Speaker, alleging that constitutional procedures were not followed. He insisted that he remains the legitimate Speaker of the House.
“If you must remove the Speaker, you must adhere to the rules. I’m not afraid of being removed. What more do I have to prove after serving as a member of the House since 2003 and as Speaker for multiple terms? So, what is the problem?” he asked.
