The Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, has called for unity and mutual support within the Efik community, emphasizing the importance of collaboration for the development of Cross River State.
Speaking at the 2024 edition of Utomo Obong on December 21 in Calabar, the revered monarch cautioned against divisive actions and the spread of misinformation, particularly regarding political matters.
Addressing speculations surrounding Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong Jr.’s alleged governorship ambitions, the Obong stated:
“I’ve heard controversial talks that Senator Asuquo intends to be the next Governor. Let us desist from such unhealthy practices. If you need something from anyone, including Governor Bassey Edet Otu, don’t resort to lies or conspiracies to gain favors.”
The monarch urged Efik leaders to prioritize unity and work collaboratively with the governor to ensure the state’s progress. He warned that divisive behaviors, especially those targeting young leaders, could hinder Cross River’s development.
“If we refuse to work together, we may find ourselves in a worse state after eight years,” he cautioned.
The Obong advocated for transparency, harmony, and a collective commitment to the community’s growth, discouraging malicious gossip and unnecessary conflicts.
During his address, the Obong commended Governor Bassey Edet Otu for his leadership and praised Senator Ekpenyong for his dedication to promoting Efik culture. He noted Senator Ekpenyong’s ability to attract his National Assembly colleagues to the event as a testament to his passion for his heritage.
“His love and pride for his cultural heritage are evident, and his large-heartedness speaks volumes,” the monarch remarked.
The celebration featured vibrant displays of Efik heritage, with various clans paying homage to the Efik Kingdom. The Obong expressed joy at the cultural unity on display, emphasizing that love and peace are essential for fostering communal harmony and societal advancement.
He also acknowledged Senator Florence Ita Giwa and the OCEF team for their efforts in organizing the event and showcasing the richness of Efik culture.
“It is a thing of joy to see such teamwork and dedication,” he said.
The Obong concluded his speech with prayers for peace and prosperity, urging the Efik people to remain united and committed to the development of their kingdom and state.
