DJAN calls for FG’s support, celebrate industry leaders

By Favour Ulebor, Abuja

The DJs Association of Nigeria (DJAN) has called on the Federal government to recognize its industry’s potential in fostering national development.

The association also honored pioneers and contributors to the growth of DJing in Nigeria during its 2024 Deejays award in Abuja.

Speaking at the event, the National President of DJAN, popularly known as DJ Perfect International, Onyebuchi Christian Edeh, highlighted the organization’s efforts to bring respect and recognition to DJs across the country.

He lamented the lack of government support for the entertainment sector, particularly DJs, despite their role in employing thousands and shaping public narratives through music.

“No organization in Nigeria employs as many people as DJs. With over 5,000 registered members across 33 states and the FCT, every DJ supports at least three or four others in their operations,” he said.

He further urged government agencies to partner with DJs in initiatives such as reducing drug abuse and youth unemployment.

Veteran broadcaster and DJ, Jacob Akinyemi-Johnson, expressed delight at receiving recognition from DJAN, describing DJs as unsung heroes of the entertainment industry.

“DJs are quintessential to the success of many artists but have remained in the background for too long. This recognition is a welcome step toward giving DJs the accolades they deserve,” he said.

Legendary music executive and founder of Kenny’s Music, Kenny Ogungbe, echoed similar sentiments, thanking DJAN for celebrating the contributions of DJs and calling on the government to create policies that support the music industry.

“Music contributes significantly to the economy, but the government needs to do more in providing funding and infrastructure to help artists thrive,” he stated.

The Director General of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), John O. Asein, emphasized on the Commission’s efforts to combat piracy and ensure copyright holders are adequately protected.

“We’ve seen a reduction in some piracy challenges due to increased awareness and stricter sanctions,” Asein noted.

He highlighted ongoing initiatives to meet the needs of creators across industries, from music to film, and reiterated the NCC’s commitment to improving the copyright system for all stakeholders.

In his remarks, CEO of Leadership Scorecard magazine and project consultant for the Nigerian DJs Awards 2024, Humphrey Onyima, emphasized the unique role DJs play in preserving and promoting Nigerian music.

“No event is complete without a DJ, no matter how corporate or serious it may be,” Onyima remarked.

He highlighted DJs as custodians of music history, often reviving old tunes and sustaining cultural heritage through their craft.

Onyima called for a national day dedicated to celebrating Nigerian DJs, underscoring their contributions to the entertainment industry and their role in enriching the nation’s cultural narrative.

“Today, we celebrate DJs and tell the world we are proud of their impact,” he stated, commending DJAN for taking the lead in honoring these unsung heroes.
