The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Ondo State, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, has identified corruption and unreasonable demands from politicians and followers as significant obstacles to good governance in Nigeria.

Speaking during the 25th Founders’ Day lecture at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, titled “Democracy, Rule of Law, and Good Governance,” Ajulo stressed the interplay between leadership and followership in achieving sustainable governance.

“All hands must be on deck to achieve good governance, which is the essence of leadership and the purpose of democracy and the rule of law,” Ajulo said. “Good followership is key to good leadership. When followers make unreasonable and selfish demands, it compromises leadership.”

He called for genuine commitment to the principles of democracy, the rule of law, and good governance to foster an egalitarian society. Ajulo described democracy as a system that empowers the people through free and fair elections, protection of individual rights, and active citizen participation.

Ajulo also commended Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA) on its progress, describing it as a beacon of academic excellence in Nigeria. “The story of AAUA epitomizes progress, with modern infrastructure, innovative programs, and a vibrant intellectual community reflecting visionary leadership,” he remarked.

The Vice Chancellor of AAUA, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, highlighted the institution’s dedication to its founding vision of producing self-reliant individuals committed to service. “Since inception, our institution has remained steadfast in groundbreaking research, knowledge creation, character development, and service to humanity,” he said.

Senator Bode Olajumoke, former Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University Council, received the Community Impact Award for his philanthropy, including the construction of facilities for physically challenged students and a law faculty building. The university renamed a hall of residence in his honor, previously known as Franklin Delano Roosevelt Hall.

Olajumoke praised the university’s transformation over 25 years, attributing its success to the contributions of past and present Visitors, including prominent figures like the late Pa. Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin and former Governors Adebayo Adefarati, Olusegun Agagu, Olusegun Mimiko, and Rotimi Akeredolu.

“Adekunle Ajasin University has grown from humble beginnings to become a center of excellence with extraordinary academic achievements, impactful research, and global recognition,” he said.

Other awardees included Dr. Bode Ayorinde, recognized for Educational Excellence, and Hon. Festus Akingbaso and Mr. Sunday ‘Loye Adewuyi, who received the Distinguished Alumni Award.

The event underscored the university’s legacy of resilience, excellence, and community service while setting aspirations for even greater achievements in the future.
