Hon. Sani Mohammed Sha’aban’s career in Nigerian politics and public service spans several decades, with roles in legislative bodies, political parties, and community projects.
He started his career as a clerk at Union Bank and as a sales accountant at the Nigerian Mining Corporation.
A native of Zaria, Kaduna State, Sha’aban has worked extensively to shape economic policies, legislative reforms, and political landscapes, both within his home state and at the national level.
Sha’aban’s political journey saw him serve as a distinguished member of the Nigerian House of Representatives between 2003 and 2007, where he was a notable participant in various key committees.
Notably, he was the Pioneer Chairman of the House Committee on PENCOM, where he championed the enactment of the 2004 PENCOM Act, a reform that transformed Nigeria’s pension industry, reflecting his dedication to issues affecting everyday Nigerian. His committee work further extended to roles within the Petroleum Resources, Science and Technology, and Public Accounts committees, which enabled him to advocate for policies impacting vital sectors of the Nigerian economy.
His role in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) further highlighted his efforts toward industrial development across member states. His engagement with ECOWAS marked a significant achievement in fostering cross-border cooperation on economic issues, a role through which he championed initiatives aimed at boosting industrial growth within West African nations.
Sha’aban is also known for his role in the formation of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), a party that would become an influential force in Nigeria’s political history. As one of the founding members, Sha’aban contributed to shaping the ANPP’s policy direction and vision. In 2007, he ran for the position of Kaduna State governor under the ANPP platform. Although he faced challenges surrounding the election results, including a dispute resolved through Nigeria’s judicial system, this run highlighted his commitment to electoral fairness and democratic principles. By 2011, he had aligned with Bola Ahmed Tinubu, contesting again as the Kaduna State governorship candidate for the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).
In 2014, Sha’aban contributed to the establishment of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and became a prominent figure within the party, reflecting his adaptability and commitment to building consensus within Nigeria’s evolving political environment. Within the APC, Sha’aban’s influence has been significant, making him a familiar figure in both local and national political contexts. His efforts have spanned advocacy, party-building, and policy promotion, earning him recognition as a political figure with considerable influence across party lines.
Beyond his political roles, Sha’aban has received numerous commendations and awards, reflecting his work’s civic impact. Some of these honors include the Fellowship of the Professional Institute of Nigeria and recognition as an Ambassador to African Affairs by the International Human Rights Commission. He has also been celebrated as an Ambassador and Unity Patron by the Nigeria Youth Organization, underscoring his longstanding engagement with the youth demographic. Hon. Sha’aban has been conferred the traditional title of Barden Keffi by the Emir of Keffi, and his traditional title, ‘Dan Buram Zazzau,’ awarded by the Zazzau Emirate Council in 2016, further underscores his contributions to local governance and cultural heritage.
Hon. Sha’aban’s recognition extends internationally; he was honored by the Atlanta City Council, Georgia, for his commitment to community development and public service. Domestically, the Nigerian Society of International Law, based at Ahmadu Bello University, presented him with an award for his efforts in international law, and he received a peace award from the Nigerian Police Force in recognition of his community engagement.
Sha’aban’s journey through politics and public service illustrates his commitment to social impact and governance. From his early days in Zaria to his international engagements, his career reflects a focus on collaborative governance, economic development, and democratic cooperation. In Nigerian public life, Sha’aban has been recognized not only for his formal roles but also for his commitment to using his platforms to advocate for economic and social betterment.
