The coalition of Ijesha Progressives has urged kingmakers in Ijesha land to uphold its revered tradition while considering the next Owa Obokun of ijesha land.

The group insisted that the next ‘Owa’ should be a young leader with a strong understanding of modern challenges and opportunities.

In a statement, signed by Tunde Oladokun for coalition, he insisted that the Ijesha royal stool has consistently been occupied by leaders in their prime who possessed the energy required to pilot the Ijesha dynasty.

The group, which includes Ijesha youths, transport workers, and market women, called on the kingmakers to uphold the revered tradition and consider a leader with a strong understanding of modern challenges and opportunities.

He said, “The next Owa Obokun must possess youthfulness, energy, visionary leadership, and commitment to empowering youths and women. He should also be able to engage with the youth, attract investment, promote cultural heritage, and foster unity and cooperation among stakeholders.

“Next Owa should be able to forge partnerships with international organisations, collaborate with other traditional rulers, and engage with local and national governments to drive innovation. We believe the innovative efforts would enhance the quality of life of Ijesha indigenes.

“As stakeholders, we are appealing to the kingmakers, elders, and stakeholders to prioritise the future of Ijesha land.”
