The recent convention of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone B (South-South) on November 9, 2024, at the College of Education in Warri, Delta State, was said to have underscored a remarkable display of students unity and democratic participation.
The newly elected coordinator, Comrade Michael Emmanuel Iwara, stated this in a statement made available to Vanguard on Sunday, adding that, the pivotal event attracted delegates from all six states in the region, reflecting a strong commitment among South-South students to engage actively in governance and advocacy.
The convention, he said, featured the participation of legitimate Student Union Government (SUG) presidents, who affirmed the election’s transparency and inclusiveness.
According to him, significant turnout emphasised the importance of collaboration and representation within the student body, showcasing a collective effort to ensure fair electoral processes.
He stated that the presence of NANS National President, Comrade Lucky Omonefe, further highlighted the event’s significance within the broader context of student activism in Nigeria.
Iwara, who hails from Cross River State, articulated a vision focused on enhancing the welfare and rights of students in the South-South region, pledging to advocate equitable access to resources and opportunities, ensuring that the voices of students are amplified in national discussions.
He emphasised his dedication to addressing critical issues related to education, social development, and student welfare.
Iwara said: “This gathering not only celebrated democratic values but also set the stage for NANS Zone B to strengthen its mission of empowering students and advocating for their rights.”
“The convention resonated with the NANS motto, “Aluta Continua, Victoria Acerta!”, a rallying cry that embodies the ongoing struggle for student rights across the nation.”
