Group Managing Director, NNPC, Mele Kyari
A coalition of civil society organizations, professionals in the diaspora, and bloggers has issued a strong warning against recent calls for the removal of Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
Oluwatoyin Animashaun with Nigeria Professionals in Diaspora read the text in a press conference held yesterday.
The coalition urged Tinubu to stand firm against the pressure to sack Kyari.
“We are here to stand in firm support of Mele Kyari and urge the President not to yield to these unfounded demands for his sack.
“These unsubstantiated accusations are nothing more than attempts to derail the critical progress that has been achieved under his leadership.”
According to the group, under Kyari’s stewardship, the Nigerian oil sector has reportedly witnessed a significant transformation, with advancements in transparency, operational efficiency, and accountability.
“Since his appointment, Kyari has been recognized for spearheading the restructuring of NNPC into a limited liability company, a move that is seen as a milestone in Nigerian energy reform.
“The successful transition of NNPC into NNPCL, with an emphasis on market-driven and transparent operations, is one of Kyari’s landmark achievements,” the group said.
Adding the group said: “This change is historic, making NNPCL more competitive globally and ensuring that it acts in the best interest of Nigerians.”
The coalition commended Kyari’s commitment to combating oil theft, a long-standing issue that has drained billions from the country’s revenue.
“Kyari’s efforts to tackle oil theft are restoring accountability in the sector.
“It is clear that he is prioritizing Nigeria’s interests above all else, which is why he faces resistance from those who benefited from the status quo.”Oluwatoyin said.
The coalition believes that the campaign for Kyari’s removal is orchestrated by those uncomfortable with the transparency and accountability he has introduced.
“We recognize that reform is often met with resistance, especially from those who have benefited from the previous status quo,” Abdullahi stated. “But we must not allow vested interests to reverse the gains made under Kyari’s leadership.”
The coalition urged Nigerians to support Kyari and his reform agenda in the oil sector, cautioning that his removal could set back critical advancements.
“Nigeria needs leaders who are willing to challenge the status quo and work in the best interests of the nation,” Animasahun added.
