KANO — The Chairman of Kano State Independent Electoral Commission, KANSIEC, Prof. Sani Lawan, said on Thursday that he is not a card-carrying member of any political party in the state.
Prof. Lawan stated this during a stakeholder meeting to present the election guidelines and timetables to the political parties ahead of the forthcoming Local Government election slated for November 30th, 2024 in the state.
The Chairman of the umpire body denied allegations that he was a card-carrying member of a particular political party in the state.
According to him, “I am not a registered member of any political party and I refused to be a registered member of any political party because of my standing as a social critic and comrade in the struggle,” Prof. Lawan said.
The electoral body Chairman, however, said the commission will conduct an election free from any form of interference while warning the political parties against any form of electoral malpractice.
“Election officials will never rig elections but the politicians are those who rig elections,” Prof. Lawan said.
He stated the commission had pegged the Chairmanship form at the cost of N10 million for interested candidates while candidates contesting for the councillorship seat to pick the form at N5 million.
Meanwhile, the Chairman explained that interested candidates vying for the Chairmanship seat must be 30 years and above while councillorship candidates must be 25 years and above.
