How Warri Pikin helped my music career – Magek Boi

Afrobeats crooner, Olamilekan Ajibade, professionally known as Magek Boi, says popular Nigerian comedienne, Real Warri Pikin played illimitable role in his career.

Without doubt, Magek Boi is currently one of the most sellable artists in Nigeria, with his 2024 hit single, “Poor Man Pikin”, dominating the numbers on streaming platforms. The jam appeals to millions of music fans and families who are at war to survival the suffocating economy climate in the country. Essentially an Afro pop singer, the gifted entertainer is loaded enough to still easily steal the show in other genres of music.

Magek Boi started music about a decade ago under the stage name “Plus One”, but his nomenclature changed after an electric performance as an up-and-coming, when the MC inadvertently mentioned that he should be nicknamed “Magic boy”. That kick started his rebranding and after years of hard work and struggles, his latest single, “Poor Man Pikin”, is the dope in the Nigerian music industry and beyond.

Magek Boi was far from being born with a silver spoon. His father is a hunter, while his late mum was a primary school teacher. Life was hard but music was the ease from the pain. The artiste had both his primary and secondary education in his home town of Iresi Boluwaduro Local Government of Osun State before bagging a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Electrical Engineering at Offa Polytechnic, Kwara State.

“Poor Man Pikin”, by Magek Boi, is everything. He realised the track this year but it feels as though it has been around for ages, measuring how it hits differently with the sonorous tone, intelligently-sequenced lyrics and the message in the song. In an interview, he spoke about how in the absence of any helper in the industry, Warri Pikin came through for him.

“Talking about realness and genuineness, Real Warri Pikin is a one in a million, She’s kind-hearted and passionate about uplifting people in anyway she can, I think she was connected to the passion behind the song “Poor Man Pikin” because she can relate and she’s not a pretender. In terms of help, I can’t literally list the help I have gotten from her bcos it’s numerous and time will not permit me, but I can say she has done everything for me, financially, physically, even prayer because I remembered the first day we met for first shoot, after the shooting she held my hands, pray with me and I was lifted. I pray the Lord keep blessing her and protect her family, she’s a kind of human we need in the society”, Magek Boi said.

“Yes, Warri Pikin is a comedian but she has done a lot, I only wish she’s into music business that would have really helped me because, none of the already established musician has really helped me, my link up with Spyro was orchestrated by Real Warri Pikin but Spyro hasn’t done anything yet, don’t get me wrong I’m not saying he’s obligated to do anything for me or feeling entitled but, I’m just setting the record straights, even if I asked you for help and you didn’t render it, I can never hold you for handsome because I’ll put myself in your shoe and be considering a lot of “What If”,the first day that I got exposure to big audience by Real Warri Pikin was the only time that Spyro shared same post on his story, oh big shout-out to Spyro I remembered the day we met at Club Vanity, he took me up to the Artiste VIP section where I stood with the likes of Skales, AV, Victor AD and so on”.

Speaking on why “Poor Man Pikin” is a hit, Magek Boi stressed that it is a reflection of his own life before grace found him, adding that nevertheless, it still reminds successful people and those still struggling in life of where they have been or where they are.

“‘Poor Man Pikin’ has so many things as inspiration but first, it’s GOD Almighty that inspired me to look around the society and my immediate community, I must say, great numbers of families can’t even afford 3 square meals, even on a more serious note, poverty is a menace in our homes, those that have defeated poverty, the likes of Obi Cubana and co, all got not-well-to-do family background. So, reminding myself of my background and reminding others with similar story, not to forget who they are and where they’re from, I had to sing about it and that’s the birth of ‘Poor Man Pikin'”, Magek Boi stated.

“I will say it’s my background story off course and also poor people in general, you’ll recollect I made mentioned of my father been a hunter and my late mother been a teacher, just pause for a moment and imagine homes with similar story as mine, don’t they deserved to be heard? They do! And that’s why I have taken it upon myself to not act as if I don’t know, that poverty is a bastard, even though the Lord has helped me already.”
