In the wake of Bangladesh’s prime minister Sheikh Hasina resigning and fleeing the country after hundreds of people were killed in a crackdown, we take a look at some other countries with female presidents.

It is interesting to note that in a world where gender equality continues to evolve, the rise of female presidents to the highest offices in their countries represents a significant milestone in the quest for equal representation.

From pioneering policies to transformative reforms, these women have not only shaped their countries’ political landscapes but have also paved the way for future generations of women in leadership roles.

Here is a list of eight female presidents in their respective countries:

1. Sandra Mason — President of Barbados

Dame Sandra Prunella Mason, a distinguished Barbadian politician, lawyer, and diplomat, made history as the first female President of Barbados, leading the country’s transition to a republic on November 30, 2021. Her illustrious career includes roles as a High Court judge, chair of the CARICOM commission, and the first woman admitted to the bar in Barbados. She stands as a symbol of progress in Caribbean politics and a trailblazer for gender equality.

2. Christine Kangaloo — President of Trinidad and Tobago

Christine Carla Kangaloo ORTT, a distinguished Trinidadian politician, lawyer, and diplomat, made history as Trinidad and Tobago’s first female President on March 20, 2023. Prior to her presidency, she served as President of the Senate and held various ministerial positions. Kangaloo’s remarkable career highlights Trinidad and Tobago’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment in leadership.

3. Samia Suluhu Hassan — President of Tanzania

Samia Suluhu Hassan, a pioneering Tanzanian politician, made history as the country’s first female President on March 19, 2021. Before ascending to the presidency, she served as Vice President and held several key governmental roles, including Minister of State. Hassan’s leadership exemplifies Tanzania’s dedication to gender equality and women’s empowerment in governance, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s political landscape.

4. Sahle-Work Zewde — President of Ethiopia

Sahle-Work Zewde, an accomplished Ethiopian politician and diplomat, made history as Ethiopia’s first female President, unanimously elected by the Federal Parliamentary Assembly on October 25, 2018. Her journey began with studies in natural science in France and includes an impressive diplomatic career with ambassadorial roles in Senegal, Djibouti, France, and representation at UNESCO and the African Union. Sahle-Work is a strong advocate for inclusivity and empowerment in Ethiopian politics. Her presidency symbolizes progress and serves as an inspiration for women across Africa.

5. Victoire Tomegah Dogbé — Prime Minister of Togo

Victoire Sidémého Dzidudu Dogbé Tomegah, a trailblazing Togolese politician, made history as Togo’s first female Prime Minister on September 28, 2020. 6. Robinah Nabbanja — Prime Minister of Uganda

7. Dina Boluarte — President of Peru

Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra, Peruvian politician and lawyer, made history as Peru’s first female President on December 7, 2022. Before her presidency, she served as the first vice president and minister at the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion. Boluarte’s leadership inspires women in Peru and reflects the country’s progress toward gender equality in politics, despite facing challenges in a politically turbulent period. 8. Võ Thị Ánh Xuân — Acting president of Vietnam
