A new cybersecurity study has revealed that consistent vulnerability management and penetration testing are now critical to reducing risks, cutting costs and improving project outcomes across major industries.
The report, authored by cybersecurity researcher Grace Egbedion and published in April 2024, examines how organisations in finance, healthcare, technology, and asset management are leveraging proactive security practices to strengthen IT project planning and execution.
Egbedion noted that the rising sophistication of cyber threats has made early security integration indispensable.
“Cybersecurity can no longer be an afterthought; it must be a continuous, proactive effort,” she said.
Drawing from multiple case studies, the researcher found that organisations that conduct regular vulnerability assessments experience fewer disruptions and avoid expenses linked to last-minute crisis management.
According to her, “The data shows significant savings derived from early detection of threats before they escalate into costly breaches.”
The study further revealed that industries handling high-value data recorded the biggest improvements in project schedules and budget compliance. By addressing vulnerabilities early, Egbedion said, companies avoided the “hidden costs” of cyber incidents that typically derail timelines.
Beyond operational benefits, the report also underscores enhanced regulatory compliance among organisations that adopt structured vulnerability management. Egbedion explained that “Regulatory adherence becomes easier when security is baked into everyday processes.”.
Despite these gains, the study highlights persistent challenges, including third-party risks and increasingly complex IT environments. Egbedion cautioned that supply chain vulnerabilities remain a major blind spot for many firms. “Modern IT systems are interconnected, and a single weak link—often a vendor—can compromise the entire chain,” she warned.
The researcher emphasised the need for continuous security monitoring as cyber threats evolve rapidly. She argued that regular updates, testing, and cross-departmental cooperation are vital, noting that “Security is dynamic, and only continuous vigilance can keep organisations ahead of emerging threats.”
A key recommendation in Egbedion’s work is stronger involvement of top management in security planning. She maintained that leadership commitment ensures adequate resource allocation and long-term stability. “When top management understands the stakes, organisations move from reactive to strategic cybersecurity,” she said.
Egbedion also urged companies to strengthen internal knowledge-sharing structures to improve collective preparedness. Teams that collaborate closely, she said, are more likely to anticipate and manage vulnerabilities effectively.
Concluding the report, the researcher identified vulnerability management and penetration testing as indispensable to modern cybersecurity frameworks. “These tools not only protect digital assets but also strengthen project outcomes, enhance compliance, and enable organisations to counter threats before they materialise,” she affirmed.
