Jamie Carragher
Jamie Carragher has laid the blame for England’s Euros final loss to Spain and overall performance at Euro 2024 on ‘big players’ who failed to deliver.
The Three Lions lost 2-1 to Spain to record a consecutive Euro final defeat having lost to Italy in the previous edition.
Nico Williams put the Spaniards ahead just after the resumption of proceedings but Cole Palmer came off the bench to pull Gareth Southgate’s side level. It was another substitute who broke English hearts with an 86th-minute winner.
Mikel Oyarzabal connected beautifully with Marc Cucurella’s assist to put the ball beyond a helpless Jordan Pickford.
Carragher who represented England at two European championships (2004 and 2006) said ‘big players’ failed to come to the party and cost England a chance to ‘bring it home’
“Sven played 442, Fabio was too strict, Gareth is too defensive! Funny how it’s always on the manager isn’t it?!! The fact is our big players didn’t turn up in this tournament. And other tournaments going back years.
“You can’t dominate every game, we battered Holland with possession & pressing. Spain were a different level. We lacked courage to get on the ball & allowed the keeper to keep going long. We then pressed really high start of second half & got cut open.” He wrote on X
England has now gone 58 years without lifting a major trophy.
Euro 2024 was held in Germany.
