As the Edo State governorship election draws closer, the political landscape is charged with anticipation and diverse sentiments. Among the candidates, one name stands out: Barrister Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party. His candidacy brings a fresh wave of optimism and promise, resonating strongly with the electorate. Here, we delve into the factors that tilt the odds in Akpata’s favor while addressing the sentiments raised by opposition candidates.

Proven track record of leadership and integrity
Olumide Akpata is not a stranger to leadership roles. As the former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), he demonstrated exemplary leadership and a commitment to justice and equity. Under his tenure, the NBA witnessed significant reforms, including the introduction of technology in legal processes, which increased efficiency and transparency. His leadership was marked by a high degree of integrity and a proactive stance against corruption, qualities that resonate well with voters seeking honest and capable governance.

Vision for comprehensive development
Akpata’s campaign has been characterized by a clear and inclusive vision for Edo State. His manifesto outlines comprehensive plans for economic revitalization, infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and social welfare. Unlike his opponents, who have been criticized for vague or unrealistic promises, Akpata presents well-thought-out and practical strategies for tackling the state’s challenges. His focus on sustainable development and job creation, particularly through the promotion of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), has garnered substantial support from various demographics, especially the youth and business communities.

Broad-based support across demographics
One of the significant strengths of Akpata’s candidacy is his broad-based support across different demographics. He has successfully galvanized the youth, women, and professionals who see in him a candidate who understands their aspirations and challenges. His approach to governance is inclusive, seeking input from diverse groups to formulate policies that reflect the collective will of the people. This broad-based support contrasts with the more segmented appeal of his opponents, positioning Akpata as a unifying figure capable of bridging divides and fostering a cohesive Edo State.
Under the current leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, several critical issues have reached alarming levels, impacting the daily lives of the citizens. The high rate of unemployment is particularly troubling. Despite the state’s potential for economic growth, job opportunities remain scarce, especially for the youth. This lack of employment has not only stunted economic development but also contributed to a sense of hopelessness among the populace. Many young people, finding themselves with few prospects for the future, are increasingly drawn towards criminal activities and cultism as alternative means of survival.
The rise in crime and cultism in Edo State is a direct consequence of the unemployment crisis. Cult-related violence has surged, creating an environment of fear and instability. This menace disrupts social harmony and places a significant strain on law enforcement agencies. The current administration has failed to implement effective strategies to curb this growing problem, leaving communities vulnerable and eroding public trust in the government’s ability to maintain order and safety.
Agriculture, once the cornerstone of Edo State’s economy, has been woefully neglected. The current leadership has not prioritized agricultural development, resulting in decreased productivity and economic output. This sector, which has the potential to generate employment and drive economic growth, has been relegated to the background. The neglect of agriculture is a missed opportunity to harness the state’s fertile land and favorable climate for food production and export. Revitalizing agriculture could significantly reduce unemployment and boost the state’s economy, but the current administration has shown little interest in this crucial sector.
The poor state of infrastructure, especially roads and schools, further exacerbates the plight of Edo State’s citizens. Many roads are in deplorable conditions, making transportation difficult and hindering economic activities. The educational sector is equally neglected, with many schools lacking basic facilities and adequate teaching staff. This neglect undermines the quality of education and hampers the development of the state’s human capital. The current administration’s failure to address these critical infrastructure needs reflects a lack of vision and commitment to the well-being of the people, leaving Edo State lagging in development.
Despite that sorry state of things across the state, there is hope that things will soon change for the better.
Commitment to transparency and accountability
In a political climate where corruption and mismanagement have eroded public trust, Akpata’s commitment to transparency and accountability stands out. His track record at the NBA is a testament to his dedication to these principles.
He has pledged to implement robust mechanisms for transparency in government operations, including open budget processes and regular public audits.
This commitment is particularly appealing to voters weary of opaque governance and unfulfilled promises.
Addressing opposition sentiments: A balanced perspective
While Akpata’s candidacy enjoys significant support, it has also faced sentiments from opposition candidates who argue that he lacks the political experience required to govern effectively. However, it is essential to note that political experience, while valuable, is not the sole determinant of effective governance.

Akpata’s legal background, leadership experience, and proven ability to implement reforms are formidable credentials that prepare him for the challenges of governance. Moreover, his outsider status can be an asset, bringing fresh perspectives and a willingness to challenge the status quo, which is often necessary for meaningful change.

Innovative policy proposals

Akpata’s policy proposals are not only comprehensive but also innovative. He has outlined plans to leverage technology for better governance, including e-governance platforms that enhance citizen engagement and streamline government services. His emphasis on renewable energy and environmental sustainability also sets him apart from his competitors. By prioritizing green energy initiatives, Akpata aims to address the power challenges in Edo State while contributing to global efforts to combat climate change. These forward-thinking policies reflect a modern approach to governance that appeals to an electorate eager for progress and innovation.

Emphasis on education and human capital development

Recognizing that education is the bedrock of development, Akpata has placed significant emphasis on revamping the educational sector in Edo State. His plans include improving educational infrastructure, ensuring better training and remuneration for teachers, and implementing policies that enhance access to quality education for all. By focusing on human capital development, Akpata aims to equip the youth with the skills necessary for the jobs of the future, thus addressing unemployment and fostering economic growth.

Building on the legacy of previous administrations

While Akpata brings new ideas to the table, he also acknowledges the achievements of previous administrations and plans to build on them. His approach is not to discard past efforts but to enhance and refine them for better outcomes. This balanced perspective ensures continuity in governance and builds on the foundation already laid for Edo State’s development. By doing so, Akpata demonstrates political maturity and a collaborative spirit, traits that bode well for his potential administration.

Grassroots connection

Akpata’s campaign has been marked by a strong connection with the grassroots. He has actively engaged with communities across Edo State, listening to their concerns and incorporating their feedback into his policy proposals. This grassroots connection ensures that his governance will be people-centric, addressing the real issues faced by everyday citizens. His ability to relate to and empathize with the populace contrasts with some opponents who are perceived as distant or out of touch with the common man’s struggles.

Countering opposition’s rhetoric

Opposition candidates have raised concerns about Akpata’s transition from law to politics, suggesting a steep learning curve. However, governance requires a combination of vision, integrity, and the ability to build a competent team. Akpata has shown that he possesses these qualities in abundance. His leadership style is collaborative, and he has demonstrated a capacity for assembling teams that deliver results. His approach to governance is likely to be inclusive and participatory, drawing on the expertise and experience of a diverse team to navigate the complexities of state administration effectively.

A detribalized Nigerian and man of the masses

Olumide Akpata is widely recognized as a detribalized Nigerian, a quality that endears him to a diverse electorate. He has consistently demonstrated that he is above ethnic and religious biases, fostering unity and inclusion. This quality is crucial in a multicultural state like Edo, where inclusiveness and equity are paramount. As an astute legal luminary and a grassroots politician, Akpata’s humanist approach ensures that policies are people-centered, promoting the welfare of all citizens. His dedication to equity and fairness in the distribution of state resources has earned him the trust and admiration of many, positioning him as a man of the masses who genuinely cares about the plight of the common man.

A Promising Future for Edo State

As the election approaches, it is clear that Barrister Olumide Akpata presents a compelling case for leadership in Edo State. His track record of integrity, comprehensive policy proposals, broad-based support, and commitment to transparency and accountability position him as a candidate capable of driving meaningful change. While opposition sentiments raise valid points, they are outweighed by Akpata’s strengths and the fresh perspective he brings to the table. The odds indeed favor Barrister Olumide Akpata, and his election could herald a new era of progress and development for Edo State.

With a well-rounded approach to governance, a clear vision for the future, and the support of a diverse electorate, Akpata is poised to lead Edo State towards a brighter and more prosperous future. The coming election is an opportunity for the people of Edo State to choose a leader who not only understands their needs but also has the capacity and commitment to address them effectively. Barrister Olumide Akpata stands out as that leader, and the odds are indeed in his favor.
