Lilypond Customs Export Command records 423% cargo growth

The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Lilypond Export Command, has recorded export cargo worth N1.39 billion under the Nigeria Export Supervision Scheme, NESS, in the first quarter of 2024, Q124, a 423.8 percent increase over the N328.2 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2023, Q1’23.

Customs Area Controller of Lilypond Export Command, Ajibola Odunsanya, gave the figure in a statement made available to Vanguard Maritime Report.

He noted that the Command processed a total of 5,891 containers valued at $236.1 million, comprising of commodities such as agricultural produce, manufactured goods, solid and extractive minerals, among others. Odunsanya said that the command facilitated the export of various commodities through a concerted efforts and strategic measures. 

He said: “A comparative analysis reveals a substantial growth trajectory in Q1 2024 compared to the corresponding period in 2023. Total containers processed in 2024 Q1 surged by 44 percent to reach 5,891(20ft and 40ft) containers as against 3,784 (20ft and 40ft) containers processed in 2023 Q1, signifying heightened trade activity at the Command. Export commodities’ value also surged by 42 percent to $236.1million as against $154.46 million recorded in 2023 Q1, underlining the sustained momentum in export performance.

“NESS payment witnessed an impressive 114 percent increase, reaching N1.39 billion from ?378.27 received in Q1 2023, indicative of enhanced revenue generation and compliance. Surcharge payment for plants and machinery, and imported goods doubled from N8.79 million in Q1 2023 to N18.22 in Q1 2024 representing a 70 percent difference, aligning with fiscal policy directives.”

Giving the breakdown he revealed that a total of 4,229 (20ft and 40ft) containers were filled with agricultural produce, generating earnings amounting to $153.43 million, NESS received a payment of N?916.49 million, underscoring the robust contribution of agricultural exports to the national economy

“With 629 (20ft and 40ft) containers dispatched, manufactured goods contributed significantly to export revenue, totaling $22.29 million. The NESS payment to the federal government amounted to N112.91 million, reflecting the sector’s resilience and competitiveness in the global market.

“The export of solid and extractive minerals witnessed a notable upsurge, with 753 (20ft and 40ft) containers dispatched, valued at $34.11 million. The NESS payment of N224.16 million highlights the immense potential of Nigeria’s mineral resources on the international stage.

“Additionally, various goods such as plants & machinery, and personal effects were exported in 280 (20ft and 40ft) containers, contributing $26.26 million to export revenue. A NESS payment of N135.77 million was made, emphasizing the diversified nature of Nigeria’s export portfolio.”
