Abia Specialist Hospital to resume dialysis, kidney care services — CMD

By Steve Oko

After four years of inactivity due to decay and non-maintenance of its equipment, Abia State Specialist and Diagnostic Centre, Umuahia is now set to resume dialysis and kidney care services.

This development is coming barely one month after Dr Chimezie Okwuonu was appointed Chief Medical Director, CMD, of the hospital by Governor Alex Otti.

The CMD, who disclosed this in a chat with Vanguard, said his major preoccupation at the moment was to restore the specialist hospital to its glory days and fulfill its core mandate as a referral centre for kidney-related ailments.

He regretted that facilities at the centre were allowed to dilapidate due to gross neglect by the previous administration, but thanked the current government in the state for reviving the centre.

According to him, the hospital houses a six-point dialysis centre which was abandoned by the previous administration to rot, “thereby denying residents access to this life-saving services.”

Dr Okwuonu, a Consultant Nephrologist and Kidney Transplant expert, vowed to restore the lost glory of the hospital and reposition it for excellence in keeping with its core mandate of delivering specialist health care and diagnostic services to residents.
