Kayode Fasua: A life dedicated to excellence in Accounting

Once upon a time, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, ICAN, dominated the accounting profession as the sole professional accounting body in the country.

Anybody who wanted to be somebody in the accounting profession struggled to attain the body’s professional qualification and sought to be inducted into its ranks as a chartered accountant.

But over time, other aspiring accountants came to see the dominance of ICAN as something that could be challenged, such that aspiring accountants could have another platform through which they could realise their professional dreams.

Thus, the Association of National Accountants, ANAN, was born to offer an alternative platform for aspiring accountants. For ANAN, the journey towards acceptance has been a long and arduous one, and the current chief executive of the professional body, Dr. Kayode Olusola Fasua, will undoubtedly be listed in the body’s hall of fame as one individual who has worked and is still working tirelessly to position ANAN as the foremost accounting professional body in Nigeria. A well-educated individual, Fasua holds a Ph.D in accounting, and is a member of many accounting bodies and the Institute of Taxation.

He holds a Ph.D in Accounting & Finance from Nasarawa State University, Keffi, before which he obtained M.SC in Accounting from Leeds Beckett University, Leeds, United Kingdom, ahead of which he earned an MBA in Management from Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma among other educational laurels. Fasua lives, dreams and breathes accounting and ANAN, and is a member of many professional organisations. A fellow of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), he is equally a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Treasury Management of Nigeria and the Association of Chartered Systems Accountants of the USA since 2012.

Fasua is also a member of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, Institute of Management Consultants, Nigerian Institute of Management and a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Forensics and Certified Fraud Investigators of Nigeria. Aside these, he is a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management, as well as Fellow and Life Member, Institute of Directors,Nigeria. Fasua’s professional development activities have earned him recognition in various parts of the country.

Though Yoruba from Ondo State, Fasua holds chieftancy titles from Plateau State; he is the Dara Davou of Vwang Chiefdom, Vwang District, Jos South Local Government, Plateau State and is also the Hasken Matasa I of Arewa Matasan Arewacin Nigeria, Abuja, in addition to holding the titles of Boba Selu of Ifegunwa Kingdom in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Baameto- Designate of Akure Kingdom, and the Aare Bobaseto of Akure Kingdom. Apart from these, Fasua has won no less than 55 awards and laurels.

These include 1Award of Excellence NUASA National Body 2023, Award of Excellence Rotary Club of Jos South 2023, Humanitarian Service Award Rotary International 2023, Award of Excellence Peoples’ Chambers, Faculty of Law, University of Jos 2023, Award of Excellence Rotary International, Jos Central 2023, Award by Nigerian Icon Democracy Award (NiDA Nigerian Icon Democracy Award (NiDA 2023), Pan Nigerian Corporate Mandate Award Coalition Of Ethnic Nationality Youth Leaders Of Nigeria (CENYLON) 2023, Integrity/Ambassadorial Award Nigerian Patriotic Youth Against Corruption & Transparency Initiative (NPYACPI) 2023, and Humanitarian and Human Capital Development Award Plateau Man of The Year Award 2023.

Other awards he won are Award of Excellence, South-West Youth Parliament 2023, Award of Excellence, The Officials Nigerian Magazine 2022, Award of Excellence ANAN North-Central Zone 2022, Award of Excellence Rotaract District 9125 2022, Vocational Service Award of Excellence Rotary International 2021. Hasken Matassan Arewa Arewa Youth Congress 2020, 16 Vanguard of Quality Legacy of the Year Bold Initiative 2020, National Patron, National Association of Polytechnic Students 2020, Award of Excellence and Nomination into CITN Council Committee 2020, Award of Excellence League of African Development Students, 2020, Award of Excellence Nigerian Youth Liberation for Good Governance, 2020, and Award of Excellence Nomination into The African Accounting and Finance Association (AAFA) Board 2020, and many others too numerous to mention.

A widely-traveled man who has visited no less than 22 countries in the pursuit of interests relating to accounting and management, Fasua holds dear values relating to excellence, discipline, integrity, diligence, good relationships and loyalty, and possesses excellent analytical, communication and interpersonal skills. He is highly-motivated, energetic, hardworking and never balks at challenges, is innovative and is good at multi-tasking.

Fasua is also the author of no less than 106 papers presented at various seminars and peer-reviewed journals on many issues pertaining to the accounting profession and management in general, a feat that is believed will qualify him for a professorial chair in an outstanding tertiary institution of learning. These, and the passion he has for ANAN and the accounting profession are what commends him for this award.
