Methodist Girls High School, MGHS, students have been charged to make sport as important as their academics saying sports is now very pertinent and the youths today rise to the top by dint of talent and hard work.
Speaking after the inter-house sport organized by the school, the Principal Mrs. Oluyemisi Padonu disclosed that, football, athletics, tennis among others have shot many to the limelight in Nigeria, Africa and indeed globally adding that, the world at present has evolved a great deal.
Marking its 144th anniversary of healthy competition among sports houses in the school citadel of learning, Padonu said, it was an exciting prospect to witness the girls compete in various events, sprints, long jump, shot put and javelin throws as well as others.
“I recall Tobi Amusan who has achieved the feat of becoming the first Nigerian world record 100-meter sprint. Asisat Oshoalla was equally being celebrated in Nigeria and the world for her football prowess.
“This is where it begins. My girls have done so much in the area of academics and everything in this world is not only academics. The girls have proved their worth in sports and I believe that in a few years to come, we will be hearing their names among international athletes.
In his contribution, Mr. Sunday Omolu, Chairman Olise Omolu Foundation, who donated the trophy to the winning House, said the foundation is concerned with the plight of Out-of-Girl children, widows and other endangered members of the society.
“We are consumed by our desire to encourage girl child education. Coming to MGHS was borne out of our desire to ensure that we contribute positively to the growth of the school. What we have done is little compared to the plans we have for the school in the coming years. We want to encourage reading culture by donating more books in the school”, he said.
The PTA chairman, Osigbeme Valentine, encouraged the students to be serious in life. “They need to imbibe all the teachings of the school. The school has instilled lots of discipline in them in the area of academics, spiritual, moral, physical and otherwise,” he said.
