Five female adults were killed, while two male and two female adults sustained various degrees of injuries in a fatal accident that occurred in the early hours of Friday at Odumodu Junction, Nteje, Oyi Local Government Area along Awka Road, Anambra State.

The accident, Vanguard gathered, was between a Mistibushi L300 bus with number plates XE245AWK and a commercial Daf/Leyland truck: T-19094LA.

The drivers of the two vehicles involved in a fatal road crash are yet to be identified but Vanguard gathered that the accident happened at about 7.30a.m. on Friday and the cause was the failed portion of the road.

According to an eyewitness, the two vehicles were heading in opposite directions: one to Awka and the other to Onitsha.

They got to the bad spot at the same time and due to the weight of the truck, the container fell off, and on the bus, killing five passengers.

Others were rescued by people around with the help of the men of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC.

“Ten people comprising, three male adults, and seven female adults were involved in the crash. Five female adults were killed, two male adults and two female adults sustained varying degrees of injuries, while one male adult was rescued unhurt.

“We must commend men of FRSC rescue team from RS5.33 Nteje for their timely intervention in rescuing the wounded victims.

“They swiftly took the injured victims to Divine Care Hospital, Umunya, while the dead were taken to Chira Hospital for doctor’s confirmation before depositing their corpses at New Jerusalem Mortuary, Nteje.

Contacted, Acting Sector Public Education Officer, Anambra State, Margaret Onabe released a statement on behalf of Sector Commander, Anambra State FRSC, Adeoye Irelewuyi.

Entitled “First information report of fatal road traffic crash at Odumodu Junction Nteje Awka road’, it noted that Sector Commander Anambra State Corps Mr. Irelewuyi, in collaboration with the Unit Commander Nteje, were currently making efforts to remove the obstruction caused by the crash, as at the time of filing this report and therefore, could to talk to newsmen on the accident.

According to the statement, “The Sector Commander offers a word of sympathy with the family of the dead victims and prays for the repose of their souls, while wishing the injured victims quick recovery.

“He urged motorist to drive with caution, just as to be observant of the their environment when driving, urging them to drive to arrive alive.“
