As Nigeria joins the world to celebrate International Women’s Day, the founder, of Crestville Development Foundation, CDF, Irene Ugbah, has urged women across Nigeria to prioritize digital skill education.
Ugbah made this call while speaking on the topic Cyber Bullying: Addressing Online Facilitated Gender-Based Violence, at an event to commemorate women’s day, organised by 100 Women Lobby Group, in Abuja.
Stressing the need for Nigeria’s federal and state government to incorporate Practical Digital Technology Education for girls into the Basic Education Curriculum, she said doing so would help promote gender equality in Nigeria.
According to her, International Women’s Day is the day set aside by the United Nations to celebrate Women and bring to the fore issues of gender inequalities. Every 8th of March women and men gather at various fora to discuss issues that affect women and girls.
While emphasizing the need for women to learn digital skills, she advised women to also learn to handle the downside such as cyberbullying.
She further called on parents across Nigeria to “build their children’s self-esteem and allow them to get to a certain level of maturity before handing them mobile devices. They should equally monitor their engagements online”, she added.
