Why Nigerian varsities must introduce programs that integrate software engineering, biology — Ukaegbu

Nigerian software engineering and bioinformatics expert, Harrison Ukaegbu, has called on universities in Nigeria to consider programs that integrate software engineering and biology.

According to him, for a nation facing endemic health challenges such as malaria and sickle cell disease, bioinformatics provides a pathway to develop tailored healthcare solutions.

Meanwhile, the field of bioinformatics emerges as a transformative space where software engineering reshapes how we understand biology.

Speaking on the rich genetic diversity and growing tech landscape in Nigeria , Ukaegbu said the country stands poised to lead innovative breakthroughs at this intersection. He added that Bioinformatics leverages computational tools to analyze and interpret biological data, offering groundbreaking solutions in personalized medicine, drug discovery, and genetic research.

Providing insight on the opportunities in bioinformatics, the expert disclosed that the global bioinformatics market, valued at $10.1 billion in 2020, is projected to grow exponentially, with applications spanning genomics, proteomics, and pharmacogenomics.

He, however, expressed concerns, saying the journey to realizing its potential in Nigeria is fraught with challenges, including limited computational resources and a shortage of interdisciplinary experts. He stated further that addressing these gaps could redefine healthcare delivery and spur economic growth.

Continuing, Ukaegbu said software engineering, a discipline that transforms complex biological queries into actionable insights, lies at the heart of bioinformatics.

“Advanced algorithms, cloud computing, and data visualization tools form the backbone of this synergy. Through my work at institutions like Google and Texas A&M University, I have witnessed firsthand how these technologies revolutionize data processing in bioinformatics.

“For instance, during my tenure as a Graduate Research Assistant, I developed a convolutional neural network (CNN) model to predict drug-potent proteins. This system achieved an unprecedented 99.4% accuracy, using techniques such as LeNet5 and advanced feature extraction. This breakthrough demonstrates the pivotal role of software engineering in advancing bioinformatics, particularly in addressing diseases prevalent in Africa,” he said.

Speaking on Nigeria’s burgeoning tech talent pool and increasing digital infrastructure, Ukaegbu said these provide fertile ground for bioinformatics innovation.

“However, fostering interdisciplinary education is crucial. Universities should introduce programs that integrate software engineering and biology, while partnerships with global tech giants can provide access to state-of-the-art tools and mentorship.

“At the same time, initiatives like genomic databases tailored to Nigeria’s unique genetic makeup could open new frontiers in precision medicine. Software engineers, equipped with tools like Python, TensorFlow, and AWS—key components of my professional toolkit—can lead these efforts, creating scalable, robust solutions to address local challenges,” he further said.

Describing bioinformatics as an opportunity for Nigeria to leapfrog into the future of science and healthcare, Ukaegbu called for collaboration among the governments, academia, and industry. According to him, investments in research, computational infrastructure, and public-private partnerships will pave the way for sustainable growth in not only solving health challenges but also establishing Nigeria as a global hub for innovation in the field.

“As Nigeria embraces the digital era, bioinformatics stands as a testament to what interdisciplinary collaboration can achieve. With the right investments, Nigeria can unlock its potential to not only transform healthcare but also inspire the world with its ingenuity,” he added.
