How academic excellence and career growth define Folorunso’s Journey

Temitope Folorunso, a Ph.D. candidate at Auburn University’s Willoughby Conservation Genomics Laboratory, is making significant strides in forest sustainability.

Her groundbreaking research focuses on fungal disease management using advanced genomic techniques, specifically targeting the genetic diversity of plant fungal pathogens causing needle blight in pine trees. By developing targeted strategies to control the spread of the fungus, Folorunso’s work aims to protect forest ecosystems and ensure economic stability in the multibillion-dollar timber industry.

“As a molecular geneticist, and with expertise in other filed such as bioinformatics I am excited to leverage my skills to provide molecular tools that address the disaster in the forest industry focusing on fungal disease management,” says Folorunso.

Her research has garnered significant attention within the scientific community, with several conference presentations and impactful publications. Her innovative approach not only advances scientific understanding but also provides practical solutions for pressing environmental challenges.

Folorunso’s academic achievements are impressive, with a Master’s degree in Zoology (Molecular Genetics) from Obafemi Awolowo University and a current GPA of 4.0 in her Ph.D. program at Auburn University. She has received several awards and scholarships, including the prestigious Auburn University Graduate Scholarship and American FARM Bureau  scholarship. Her research has been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at various conferences both internationally and locally.

Beyond her research, Folorunso’s commitment to community service underscores her holistic approach to sustainability. Starting her volunteer work in Nigeria, she participated in the Insecticides Treated Net Mass Campaign and served as a field data collector for the Malaria Consortium’s Baseline Household Survey in Ondo State. She also holds a Guinness World Record for supporting the most hugged trees by an individual, highlighting her dedication to forest conservation. In the United States, she has volunteered at the Farm Bureau Conference in Nebraska, repackaged food at Foodbank, and lectured at the Junior Minorities in Agriculture, Natural and Related Sciences (MANRRS) Institute Conference. Her extensive volunteer work demonstrates a profound commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement.

Folorunso’s career growth has been exceptional, holding several leadership positions and memberships in professional organizations such as the, the noble SIGMA XI, The American Phytopathological Society, and Genetics Society. Her commitment to mentoring and inspiring the next generation of scientists is evident through her mentorship of undergraduate students and participation in outreach programs to promote STEM education.

As Folorunso continues her research and career growth, she aims to make a lasting impact in forestry industries.
